Opportunities for the Rail Industry in Greece

The opportunities are substantial and they are mainly attributed to 3 major reasons/enablers:  The opportunity and the potential given by the global supply chains in their efforts to dispatch their goods

  • riginated ex Far East to the consumption markets of Central Europe

 The completion (2014) of the rail connection between the Port of Piraeus (PCT) and the main backbone of the GR Rail Infrastructure (via Thriassio Freight Centre)  The completion of the double track line on the axis Athens‐Thessaloniki incl. electrification in H1/2019 along with signalization/ telecommand.

  • Significant Improvement in network’s Capacity (more slots per day)
  • Improvement of avg operational speeds of the trains resulting to major

reduction of transit time Full Traction Electrification and Telecommand (ETCS Level 1) for the Piraeus‐ Idomeni/Gevgelija route in 2020 resulting to:

  • Significant Improvement in network’s scheduling
