I will demonstrate most common Pick/Roll offensive and defensive actions with their breakdown drills to help you get your athletes and teams ready. I will divide my presentation into 5 sections; A. Warm – Up Exercises (Offense, Defense, Passing, Drive & Kick and Shooting) B. Understanding of 1v0 and 1v1 Pick and Roll Fundamentals C. “2v2 Game” Offensive and Defensive Drills D. “3v3 Game” Going through Transition, Secondary, Half – Court Set Plays and Breakdown Drills E. “4v4 Game” Breakdown Drills and Games Before you start teaching “Pick/Roll” offensive and defensive fundamentals to your team; First, I want you to think of your athletes and know their; 1. Physical and Athletic ability, 2. Basketball fundamental levels (Dribbling, Passing, Shooting etc...) Secondly, I want you to ask yourself; 1. Where do I want my team to set the screens? (exp. middle, side, high elbows, flat …) 2. What kind of angle do I want my players to set the screen? 3. How do I want to locate other players on the court? (players who are not in the pick/roll action) 4. What are their ability to do things on the floor? (Are they good at Shooting? Driving? Passing? etc…) Thirdly, I want you to decide the type Pick / Roll action do you want from your team; 1. Ball is already at the spot, where the pick wants to be set and screener sprints into the spot. 2. Screener is already at the spot, and the ball handler is bringing the ball to meet with the screener. 3. The ball is moving into the direction where the screener sprints to set. 1

WARM – UP EXERCISES In this section, I would like to demonstrate the drills that I usually do with my athletes to get them ready for playing pick/roll games. It is important to understand that breakdown drills would help your athletes understand Pick/Roll game in a micro level. When you bring all the pieces together and start playing 4v4 and 5v5, your athletes would feel much more comfortable executing what you are looking for them to do. I divide my warm – up sessions into 5 sections, they are; 1) Physical and Athletic Preparation Drills (Agility, Quickness, Speed, Footwork and power exercises) 2) 1v0 Defence Drills for Guards and Bigs (Footwork, Close – Outs, Slides and Sprints) 3) 1v0 Offense Drills for Guards and Bigs (Off the dribble attacking to the hoop and finishing around the hoop) 4) Passing Drills for Guards (Push, Hook, Under/Over Hand) 5) Drive/Kick & Spacing - Shooting Drills for Guards and Bigs B. UNDERSTANDING OF 1V0 AND 1V1 PICK AND ROLL FUNDAMENTALS I want my offensive players to create space and time before he/she uses the screen, on the other hand I want my defensive players to take away those options all the time to disturb any pick/roll game happening. As I mention to you earlier that there are three types of Pick/Roll action occurs all the time; 1) Ball is already at the spot; screener is sprinting to set a screen. 2) Screener is already at the spot; ball handler is bringing the ball to the spot. 3) Both screener and the ball handler are going into the designated spot. I want my OFFENSIVE players to execute these fundamentals; Ø Eyes are up all the time (looking ahead) and use your peripheral vision to see most of the court. Ø Get into a body position that will allow you to use the screen (2 types of body positioning I would recommend, straight or sideways). Ø Use your body to create a space and channel your defender (set your defender up) to the screener - inside shoulder has to be active to keep the defender away and non-dribbling hand has to be used to protect the ball consistently -. Ø Force defender to backpedal not slide. I want my DEFENSIVE players to execute these fundamentals; Ø Anticipation, Listening and Avoidance Ø Put ball pressure to disrupt the rhythm of the ball handler 2

  3. [DOCU MENT PICK & ROLL TEACHING FUNDAMENTALS FOR BOTH OFFENCE AND DEFENCE By Fatih Akser (University of Regina WBB Assistant Coach & Basketball Saskatchewan High Performance Coach) Contact: fatihakser@hotmail.com Website: www.fatihakser.com Ø Always try to take away space and time (know when to put pressure and when not to put pressure) Ø Be ready to use your footwork and hands to go over or under the screen Ø Focus on not getting hit by the screener (drop down inside shoulder, and don’t allow screener to find your upper body) In this section, I am going to use several breakdown drills to go through all these fundamentals that I am looking for my players to execute all the time. I like to prepare my players for three different scenarios that happens all the time during the game and set my drills up accordingly. They are; 1. Full Court Transition Scenarios (Free flowing situations such as “Drag” screens) 2. Secondary Actions (Pre – determined screens, such as “Up” screens that usually comes from the ball side or weak-side) 3. Half – Court Combination actions (such as UCLA to Pick/Roll, Down Screen to Pick/Roll, etc.…) C. “2V2 GAME” OFFENSIVE AND DEFENSIVE DRILLS As you start teaching 2v2 Pick/Roll games to your athletes, you will see there are more fundamental details that you have to start emphasizing during your drills and practices. In this section, I will focus on all the necessary teaching points both offensively and defensively. I will also start demonstrating defensive tactics that you can use against any pick and roll offensive actions. There are lots of different ways of defending pick and roll actions. In this clinic I will focus on; Ø Over (Big man drops one step down, guard goes over the screen) Ø Under (Big man drops one step down, guard goes under the screen) Ø Hard Hedge (Big man diagonally hard hedges and stays two dribbles, guard goes under the hedge) Ø Switch (Big man jumps on the ball hard and guard rolls down with the offensive big – stays on top) I want my OFFENSIVE players to execute these fundamentals; Ø Screener has to be fast and make an eye contact before he/she starts his/her action. Ø Ball Handler has to read and react into what defence offers him/her. Ø On the ball player; has to take quick actions (He/She has to take less dribble to get to the result and have to finish around the hoop or pass quick) Ø Off the ball player; has to be observant and get ready to catch and shoot or attack to close – out immediately (don’t pause!) I want my DEFENSIVE players to execute these fundamentals; Ø Screener’s defender has to communicate early and has to be loud (you have to have a call to establish a communication line between screen defender and the ball handler defender. For example; as soon as screener crosses the free throw line big defender calls “Over”, “Under” etc…) 3

[DOCU MENT PICK & ROLL TEACHING FUNDAMENTALS FOR BOTH OFFENCE AND DEFENCE By Fatih Akser (University of Regina WBB Assistant Coach & Basketball Saskatchewan High Performance Coach) Contact: fatihakser@hotmail.com Website: www.fatihakser.com Ø Guard’s defender, as soon as he/she hears the screen call by the big, he/she moves from a squared-up stance to channeling the ball in one direction. (You will have to eventually decide what direction you want to channel) Ø Whatever direction the guard channels his/her stance; the big jumps to the direction where the guard’s feet are angled toward. Screener defender has to be on the side of the screen immediately where he/she can contain/slow the ball down and help his/her teammate to recover. D. “3V3 GAME” GOING THROUGH TRANSITION, SECONDARY, HALF – COURT SET PLAYS AND BREAKDOWN DRILLS As you start using more spaces on the court to play pick and roll, you are also going to start hearing more questions from your players regarding offensive and defensive coverage. In this section, I will go through some drills that are going to help you teach all the necessary pick and roll fundamentals. All the drills and actions are going to cover full court transition (free flowing actions), secondary break actions, half – court set plays and breakdown drills. I want my OFFENSIVE players to execute these fundamentals; Ø Know your passing options and the way you should be passing (triangle pass option: “hook” pass, spacing pass option; “push” pass) Ø Spacing rules and principles for off the ball players. (Read/React close outs) I want my DEFENSIVE players to execute these fundamentals; Ø Understand the “First Line of Defence” (establishing shortest close outs options). Ø Off the ball body positioning; “Stance” and “Stunting” Ø Establishing weakside help and identifying weakside rotations. E. “4V4 GAME” BREAKDOWN DRILLS AND GAMES In this section I will go through some breakdown drills for certain actions that are very common all over the world, such as; Ø UCLA Entry to Pick/Roll, Ø Down Screen to Pick/Roll, Ø Horns, Ø Iverson Cut to Pick/Roll In this section, I will also go through some 4v4 decision making drills as well as going to emphasize all the offensive and defensive coverage (on the ball and off the ball). 4
