PINEAPPLE VARIETIES

Queen pineapple plants mainly grow in Australia, the Philippines and South Africa. Pineapple plants in this group are smaller and produce smaller fruit that weighs between 1 and 6

  • pounds. The fruit is juicy

and flavorful but tends to be cone-shaped, which results in excessive waste if this variety is used for commercial canning. It does keep well, and is harvested for sale as fresh fruit. The foliage on these plants tends to be medium green, although the “Ripley” cultivar leaves have a red tint.

Red Spanish

PINEAPPLE VARIETIES

The Red Spanish pineapple group usually grow in Florida, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and the West

  • Indies. These tend to be larger

plants with very spiny gray- green or purple-green foliage. The fruit has a rounded shape and generally weighs between 3 and 6 pounds, although the “Valera Amarilla” cultivar can produce fruit that weighs up to 9 pounds. In the Philippines, particularly in Aklan, pineapple leaves are sources of hand-woven fabric.

PINEAPPLE VARIETIES

Grown in hot climates around the world, Smooth Cayenne pineapple plants tend to be more susceptible to disease than

  • varieties. However, the leaves

do not have the spiny edges

types. The juicy, flavorful fruit generally weighs between 2 and 10 pounds. The “Giant Kew” cultivar is an unusual member

  • f this group, with pineapples

that can weigh as much as 22 pounds. Most

  • f

these pineapple plant varieties are grown commercially for canning or sale as fresh fruit.
