BASICS
- Initially a 2-3 look
- Player on ball must apply heavy
ball pressure.
- Force to the baseline. Never the
middle!
- Off the ball defenders must
react to passes while they are in the air, not after they have been caught.
- Communicate! Great teams and
players talk. Selfish teams and players are quiet.
5 MAN
- Must stay between the
ball and basket at all times.
- Give cautious pressure
at high post. Don’t get beat to hoop.
- Protect basket at all
costs!
Point guard (1)
- Set up on the top side
- f zone.
- Set up on right side of
- floor. Most offenses
trigger on this side.
- Call ball and contain.
Shooting guard (2)
- Sets up on left side of
zone because most shots will come off to his side.
- He is the best
rebounding guard
Small Forward (3)
- Sets up on the bottom
- f the zone on the
right side.
- This player will
normally be the better
- n ball defender of the
forwards.
Power Forward (4)
- Sets up on the bottom
left side because this player is the best rebounding forward.
Movements
Talk-Fly-Contest-Deny
Movements
- Player on the ball MUST
yell “ball” every time.
- The player opposite and
behind is in the hole and MUST yell “hole” every time
- If point is on the ball then
PF is hole man and vice versa
Ball reversal
- When the ball is
reversed the 2-3 look will quickly change to a 1-3-1 once the “hole” man is established.
Bluffing
- When the ball is passed to
the wing, the low man(3
- r 4) will bluff, or foot
fake to give the 1 time to get over.
- Thus, after the initial
pass, the 1 will still be on the ball, with the 3 covering the baseline runner.
Off the Ball
- The high guard (1 or
2) will have a hand and foot in high post area to cover big man.
- Weak side low man
will be the “hole man.”
Baseline Runner
- This can be tricky
- If ball side low man (3) is covering, the opposite low man
(4) will have to come across, cover the runner and pressure and force baseline.
- The 3 will drop back into a help position on the high post
(hand and foot).
- The 5 stays between ball and hoop
- The 1 is now the “hole”
man, but he is looking to cheat the weak side wing.
- The 2 will be in basket protect position.
What if…the high post catches?
- The 5 will come out
and give cautious
- pressure. ( A hand up
but not so close as to get beaten)
- If the ball is dribbled
the 1 and 2 will get a hand in for a deflection.
What if…someone cuts through?
- Stamp the cutter until
the 5 man or hole man picks him up.
- The get bask in
position ASAP!
What if…someone dribbles penetrates?
- It better not!
- If so, the man on the ball
stays with the dribbler.
- If dribbler is not
penetrating and going around perimeter, the rule is…
- Rotate away from dribbler
if he is coming toward
- you. Rotate toward
dribbler if he is going away from you.
