GCPS Requirements Biology Chemistry Physics 4th Year Science
**High School Physical Science (Carnegie unit course in 8th grade) does NOT replace physics requirement. It does NOT replace the 4th year science requirement. **Intent of HS Physical Science course is to provide better foundation for chem and physics at the high school level.
- Factors to consider when choosing a science
level: – Math Placement – Physical Science Teacher Recommendation – Rigors of each level – Work Ethic of Student
Three Levels of Science: College Prep (CP), Honors, and Gifted:
- Honors Science is NOT easier than
Gifted.
- Instructional approach varies for
honors vs gifted.
- A student has to test into the Gifted
Program for Gifted science and are taught by gifted certified teachers. Keep in mind . . .

CP Biology Honors/Gifted Biology
Students are more extrinsically motivated; teacher support needed for abstract/critical thinking. Students are taught incrementally to be more self-directed and independent. Students are more intrinsically motivated and independent thinkers. Students should already be self-directed and independent workers.
CP Biology
AKS-based with NO AKS extensions
Honors/Gifted Biology
AKS-based WITH Honor/Gifted AKS extensions Pacing & HW: No AKS extensions means pacing is slower allowing for more practice and application in class; expect 2-3 nights of written HW Classroom instructional approach: more teacher- centered with direct instruction via notes/lecture, problem-solving, labs/simulations Pacing & HW: AKS extensions require an accelerated pace since learning is more in-depth; students should be able to learn/master content quickly; expect multiple projects during the semester and nightly HW Classroom instructional approach: more student- centered with inquiry-based approach; less direct notes/lecture and more research by student
CP Biology Honors/Gifted Biology Summative Assessments: include both multiple choice and free response questions. Application is emphasized over
- memorization. Covers
regular AKS without extensions. Summative Assessments: include both multiple choice and free response questions. Application is emphasized over
- memorization. Covers
regular & honors/gifted extensions built into the AKS
