Park Vista Community High School School Counseling Department Senior Class Presentation Welcome to your senior year of high school!!! Who would have guessed this is the path you would have taken to get here? The way the school year ended last
Welcome to your senior year of high school!!! Who would have guessed this is the path you would have taken to get here? The way the school year ended last year and has begun this year is not without its challenges. But, your school counseling department wants you to know that you need to keep your eye on the prize. Whether your plan is to attend a 4 year university, a community (state) college, a career/vocational school, go into the military, or enter the work force, we encourage you to use this year to make your plan become a reality. Each year, school counselors meet with seniors in small groups and individually to discuss plans, lay out time lines, present options, etc. Since we are unable to meet in person, this year is going to be a little different. This presentation contains all of the materials we would be presenting to you if we were in a live setting. It is important to review this presentation thoroughly. Your school counselor is available to you in case you need any guidance, have any questions, need assistance, or want to discuss your options. Please feel free to contact your counselor, via email at this point, to make this the best senior year it can be.
This is the table of contents for the senior packet that can be found on the school’s website (pvchs.com), under the School Counseling tab, and then under Class of 2021 (Seniors). Feel free to download and/or print the packet for easy reference throughout this year. As you can see, it is full of important materials.
We begin with the senior
- checklist. This list
contains items that are important to checkoff as the year progresses and provides links for items you may need. One important link is for the COLLEGE ADMISSION
- HANDBOOK. This
contains every step necessary for the application process, start to finish. It can be found under School Counseling and then under College Information.
This form is an excellent way to keep track of where you are in the application process for each of the colleges to which you are applying. It is generally recommend that you apply to somewhere between 3-5 colleges. Most students apply to a Reach school, a Target school, and then a Safety school. See the College Admissions Handbook for a complete description of these.
The School Counseling Department wants to keep you in the loop with the latest news, scholarship info, college/vocational visits, financial aid, Bright Futures application deadlines, etc. Just scan the QR code to begin receiving the updates. You can also follow us on Twitter and Instagram!
- Ms. Carlson will be hosting
weekly SENIOR COUNSELING PLANNING WORKSHOPS beginning September 15 at 2:45 pm. These live workshops are open to both seniors and their parents. This is a 6-part series of workshops covering all you will need from the beginning of the college application process to financing a college education.
YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS THIS!!!
Seniors need to remember that an
- nline course AND at least 20
community service hours are required for graduation, parking decals (suspended for this year), and senior activities. If you are senior that has not completed your online course or community service hours, we recommend that you do so as soon as possible. Online courses can be found at www.flvs.net and you can print your community service hours log and upload it under the School Counseling tab and then under Community Service Information.
If you do not already have a Florida Virtual School account and have not yet completed your
- nline course
requirement, please follow these steps.
You can print your community service hours log and upload it and the supporting materials under the School Counseling tab and then under Community Service Information.
The SAT and ACT are now both being
- ffered again at Park Vista
Community High School. If you need to take or retake the SAT and/or ACT for college admissions, to meet Bright Futures Scholarship qualifying scores, to meet the concordant score for the FSA ELA graduation required test, for
- ther scholarship consideration, or for
any other reason, you will want to register as soon as possible because each site (including PVCHS) has a limited number of seats they can
- ffer.
If you participate in the FREE/REDUCED LUNCH PROGRAM, you are eligible for up to 2 free SAT and ACT tests as well as an unlimited number of college application fee waivers at participating colleges and universities.
What does it take to get into one of Florida’s state universities?
(Note: We are waiting for an update to this information and will make it available as soon as we receive it.)
Check out a few of Florida’s private colleges and universities
Here are some helpful hints for navigating your SIS Portal. We
- ften are asked for an
“unofficial” transcript so you can look at your history of grades, courses, and test
- scores. All of this is available on
your SIS Portal….if you know where to find it. For “official” transcripts, see the next slide.
You will be asked by some colleges, universities, special programs, and scholarships for “official” transcripts. To order your “official” transcript, you will need to go to www.parchment.com. You will be asked to set up an account and then will be able to see an updated transcript and send “official” transcripts.
Are you interested joining a branch
- f the military? If so, you will want
to speak to a military recruiter. The military sponsors the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) Test each year at PVCHS for FREE. If you have ever heard someone say that they took a test in high school that suggested they become a doctor, lawyer, mechanic, etc……they probably took the ASVAB. We do not have a date that it will be given yet but will notify you when we do. Be on the lookout!
There are several Career/Vocational Colleges and Schools in the area. They usually focus on a specific group
- f vocations that are their
- specialty. Do your
research and visit them if you are interested.
Palm Beach State College has dozens
- f degrees, certificate programs, and
- diplomas. Check out their offerings
and do some research on their website at www.palmbeachstate.edu.
Unsure about what you want to be when you grow up? It’s time to start some career research.
Each year, PV School Counseling Department hosts dozens of college/career visits. We also
- ffer several ONSITE ADMISSIONS/APPLICATION
- pportunities. Here are just a few because we
are constantly adding them. This is another reason it is important to sign up for the School Counseling Reminders!!!

Letters of Recommendation
For colleges and scholarships that require letters of recommendation, please visit pvchs.com, click on the School Counseling tab, and then click on the Class of 2021 (Seniors) tab for a detailed explanation for requesting a letter of recommendation from your school counselor. Please note that most of the state universities DO NOT require a letter of recommendation. If the university does not require a letter of recommendation, DO NOT SEND ONE. To assist in writing an accurate and detailed letter of recommendation, please carefully fill out the form on our website. The questionnaire is designed to help acquire a comprehensive picture of you and your accomplishments. If you have a resume, feel free to attach it. Leave any questions blank if you feel that you have already answered them somewhere else or you are unsure of the
- answer. However, remember that the more information that you give, the more detailed and
complete the recommendation can be. Ultimately, your letter of recommendation will mirror the effort and work that you put into this questionnaire. As a courtesy, please submit this completed packet and request at least two weeks in advance of the recommendation due date. *Note: Letters of recommendation for universities that require them will only be written once you have completed the student application.

The Importance of the High School Resume (Source: CollegeBasic.com)
Most high school students think a résumé is not needed until one graduates from college and is in the process of finding employment. This is far from the truth! It is an essential part of your college application. Because admission to college is so highly selective today due to the marked increase of students applying for the limited open slots, it is imperative that you find a way to stand apart from all of the other applicants. A high school résumé can help do that for you! It is one of the most important marketing tools that you can use in selling yourself. Essentially your résumé provides a snapshot picture of the "REAL" you: your interests, passions, achievements, and contributions BOTH in and out of the classroom. Although the résumé includes the same information that a college application asks for, it has several distinct advantages:
- Your résumé will highlight your most significant achievements and experiences during your high school career
and, in doing so, it may help you develop a thematic approach to your application. By reading through your résumé, you may gain insight into what makes you so special and unique from other students. You can then work this theme of what makes you "you" throughout your application.
- The college application allows only limited space to relate your academic and extracurricular achievements.
Your résumé will give you the opportunity to elaborate on ALL of your significant involvement and achievements in activities both in the classroom and in the community and, most importantly, you will be able to describe the specific contributions you made in each endeavor.
- After you develop your résumé, it is a "done" document so it will be easy for you to simply transfer this
information to your college application without making an error or omitting any significant experiences or honors achieved.
- You can use your résumé to help your teachers and guidance counselor write a better recommendation for you
because it will remind them in specific detail of your interests and the many accomplishments you have achieved during high school. It will also demonstrate to them your seriousness of purpose in the college application process and your good organizational skills. A well-done résumé will enhance your application by providing a professional and organized appearance to your application package. Your résumé serves many purposes, but its main goal is to help you gain a competitive edge in the college application and scholarship application pools. Don't be afraid to market yourself. Use your résumé to shine!
HOW IS YOUR RESUME LOOKING?
Does the college/scholarship to which you are applying require essays? Have you started your essays? Are there deadlines?
