OUR MISSION

Over the past 15 years, Info Birmanie has been working with Burmese ac• vists and civil society organiza•

  • ns campaigning for the promo•
  • n
  • f human rights and democracy in Burma. Many were poli•

cal prisoners, and fought against the military regime alongside ac• vists from across the country. Today some of these ac• vists are working to promote peace, democra• c transi•

  • n and protect persecuted minori•

es. We have seen the relevance and eff ec• veness of their ac• vi• es in Burma, but the lack of human, fi nancial and logis• cal means such as lack of technical knowledge limits their impact. Info Birmanie wants to empower those organiza•

  • ns to give them the resources and tools to sustain their ac•

vi• es, expand their audience and be more effi cient. We also wish to create bridges between the French and Burmese civil society to bring Burmese general knowledge of interna•

  • nal issues

and to raise awareness of young French people to the principles of human rights, peace and democracy in the world. The ra•

  • nale of the project is the convic•
  • n that without a strong civil society it is impossible to promote a culture of peace and tolerance,

to protect civil and poli• cal rights and engage the ci• zens in the democra• c transi•

  • n.

PRESENTATION OF INFO BIRMANIE

Info Birmanie was founded in 1996 by French ci• zens willing to support the struggle for human rights in Burma and to convey the demands for democracy expressed on several occasions by Burmese people since 1988. Info Birmanie is an advocacy and informa•

  • n centre, whose main mission is to inform and increase awareness of the poli•

cal, economic and social system, so as to promote peace, democracy and human rights in Burma. Info Birmanie is a partner of organisa•

  • ns in civil society based in Burma, and acts as a bridge between local Burmese forces and civil

society in France. These links enable us to relay quality prac• cal informa•

  • n.

Info Birmanie serves this double objec• ve by organizing three types of ac• vi• es:

  • Lobbying French public offi

cials in order to get a stronger poli• cal stand from the French government (ul• mately to step up pressure

  • n the Burmese military regime) whether it be in its bilateral rela•
  • ns or via mul•

lateral forums such as the European Union of the United Na•

  • ns.
  • Raising awareness and informing the general public and the media on the evolu•
  • n of the poli•

cal, economic and social situa•

  • n

in Burma.

  • Reinforcing Burmese democra•

c organiza•

  • ns and the interna•
  • nal network suppor•

ng them in order to increase their credibility among public authori• es throughout the world.
