Creative Science Augmented Reality (AR)

Inclusion of virtual objects in

the real world

Our interest is to reconstruct

3D models of ancient buildings in situ.

This makes visits to cultural

heritage sites more interesting and preserves the original structures.

Research Issues (1/2)

To generate the right view of a 3D model, we

have to know where the person is standing and which direction they are looking.

Conventionally, these have been done using

GPS and orientation sensors - but GPS in particular is too inaccurate for a mobile user.

To overcome this, we are exploring SLAM, a

technique from robotics for working out where you are relative to your surroundings as you explore them.

Research Issues (2/2)

An environment with only

static 3D models quickly becomes boring.

To introduce dynamic

content, we can use “AI agents” (chatterbots, etc.) to interact with the user.

We are particularly

interested in agents that adapt to the user and teach him or her something about the environment in which they are immersed.

Conclusion

We want to move from static augmentation

to a more interactive, immersive experience.

There are many applications beyond

cultural heritage: civil engineering, surgery training…
