The future begins today,

  • ver 120 years ago.

1898 1914

Lignite as the key to inexpensive electricity. RWE builds the first national power line in Germany.

1928 1950s

Electricity for the post- war economic miracle. Ludwig Erhard opens Weisweiler lignite-fired power plant.

1955 1970s

Nuclear power offers security of supply.

2002

CO2 output reduced through the use of lignite-fired power stations with optimised plant technology (BoA). Research, development and testing of renewables.

1976

Transaction with E.ON, making RWE one of the world’s largest generators of electricity from renewable sources.

2019

Founding and IPO of innogy SE.

  • Between 2012 and 2019, RWE reduced its CO2 emissions by

almost 90 million tonnes. This represents a 51% reduction.

  • In 2020 RWE will be decommissioning its last coal-fired power

station in the UK.

  • RWE is in the process of converting its coal-fired power stations

in the Netherlands to biomass.

  • Further coal-fired power stations will be taken off the grid in

Germany by 2030, in accordance with the recommendations of the country’s structural-change commission.

  • Germany wants to exit coal-based power generation by 2038.
  • From 2040 RWE will be using renewables and storage facilities

almost exclusively. Natural-gas power stations are to ensure reliable supply through the use of “green” gas and CO2 sinks.

Power-to-X

Power-to-X technologies are to be developed in the Rhineland in a partnership between industry and research. The purpose is to produce synthetic fuels (“e-fuels”), e.g. methanol, from green hydrogen and CO2 produced in power stations and industrial plants.

Hydrogen

RWE is conducting research into the possible uses of hydrogen in the GET H2 project and through the installation of a 105-MW power-to-gas electrolysis facility in Lingen,

  • Germany. RWE is also a partner

in hydrogen research in the region of Groningen, Netherlands, and South Wales, UK.

Thermal energy storage

Conversion of a coal-fired power station into a thermal-storage power plant, in which the generation of steam using coal is replaced by heat from a molten- salt thermal storage tank, generated from solar and wind power.

Geothermal

EU project overseen by Geologischer Dienst NRW. RWE is using its Weisweiler power station for deep geothermal utilisation: long- term transformation of the district heating network.

Our responsibility

slide-18
SLIDE 18

RWE corporate presentation 14.07.2020

RWE is a responsible partner. And we are proud of our roots.

Although we are an internationally active company today, our roots lie in the Rhineland and Ruhr region. We have grown with the regions – and they have grown with us. Our commitment today is based on this understanding. We assume responsibility as a reliable partner with numerous social endeavours, education cooperations and local sponsorship in all the regions in which we are active in energy production. Moreover, we will be recultivating to a high ecological standard the opencast-mining sites for agricultural and forestry use over the coming decades.
