Invasive Species Specialist Group

Two Core Areas of ISSG’s Work

  • Policy and Technical Advice

The ISSG membership provides technical and scientific advice to IUCN and its members, and national and regional agencies in developing policy and strategies to manage the risk of biological invasions

  • Information Access and Exchange

The ISSG promotes and facilitates the exchange of invasive species information and knowledge using several mechanisms, these include Online resources and through networks

Global Invasive Species Database - Restructure

  • Improved arrangement of data and information to facilitate

analysis

  • Improvement interface/ user-friendly and interactive
  • Improved Search Functionality
  • Comprehensive schema for pathways of introduction both local

and long distance dispersal

  • Comprehensive schema for invasive species impact mechanisms

and impact outcomes including impact on ecosystem services

  • Enable GISD to function as an early detection and rapid

response tool- Integration of standalone Global Register of Invasive Species (GRIS)

  • Enable inter-operability with other relevant databases and

resources for e.g. internal links with the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species Current Capacities relevant to Target 9 and GIASIP

Global Register of Introduced and Invasive Species- GRIIS

  • Annotated Inventory of Introduced and Invasive Species including

information on pathways of introduction

  • Potential to use as an Early Warning and Rapid Response system
  • Prototype- Standalone GRIS Stage 1 developed in 2008 to developed

inventory of invasive species that were being introduced through the Pet Trade

  • Prototype- Standalone GRIS Stage 2 further development of the tool.

Included was a current inventory of known marine introduced/invasive species

  • 2011 -2012- Integrated into the GISD now renamed GRIIS- Global

Register of Introduced and Invasive Species.

  • Planned development through collaborative approach

Compendium of Pathways of Spread of Invasive Alien Species

Information Services of the ISSG

Tools Under Development

  • A web-enabled, searchable analytical tool, search functions

include pathway, species, trade, regulations, codes of conduct etc.

  • Based on Comprehensive schema /Pathway framework developed

for the GISD

  • Each pathway treated in-depth
  • List of genera and species that have been and could potentially be

dispersed through a specific pathway

  • Trades associated with the pathway
  • Country-wise Links to regulations or protocols that have been

developed- case studies of best practice

  • Alerts and emerging issues/listing of species
  • Case studies of best practice including incursions and emergency

response

  • Can be used as a prioritizing tool for pathway management

Networking Portal for Invasive Species Practitioners on Island Regions Pilot for the Western Indian Ocean Region

  • Information exchange, experiences, lessons learned,

best practice, research and innovation

  • List service
  • Document manager
  • Skills exchange- Skills register
  • Awareness of invasive species related activities-

Projects database

  • Webinars
  • Multilanguage function

On-going Initiatives

Templates for Economic Evaluation of Invasive Species Impacts Collate information required to make economic assessments

  • n impacts of invasive species on biodiversity, ecosystem

services, trade and commerce, cultural value etc. Useful  To conduct cost-benefit analysis  Decision Support Tool  To priorities management action  Setting budgets  To raise awareness Current Capacities relevant to Target 9 and GIASIP

Information Services of the ISSG

Information components relevant to Target 9

  • Inventory of alien species known to be invasive
  • Identification of species- Images of species or links to images that

can be used for diagnostic purposes

  • Distribution records of introduced and invasive species that

includes both its native range and known introduced range

  • Lists of pathways of introduction and spread
  • Management information
  • Links and information on Risk Assessments
  • Description of the impact of the invasive species
  • Contact details of species experts

Potential use of information relevant to Target 9

Information Services of the ISSG

 Create Alert Lists, Early Detection and Rapid Response  Support conduct Risk Assessments  For Pathway management  Support Biosecurity  For Management action  For Prioritization of management action including management of pathways  For Analysis & Assessments  For Development of Indicators  Links to experts Current Capacities relevant to Target 9 and GIASIP

Invasive Species Specialist Group

Challenges & Opportunities

Exercises

  • Information for conducting risk assessments
  • Some species were not profiled in the GISD
  • Impact information especially potential not described

adequately in assessment area

  • Current data and information could be absent

Some Challenges

  • Sustainable funds
  • Information management- deluge rather than drought
  • Anticipating User needs- recognizing differing needs
  • Using different methods for information dissemination
  • Collaboration- Sharing data and information
  • Building decentralized model
  • Avoiding duplication

Current Capacities relevant to Target 9 and GIASIP

slide-15
SLIDE 15

Challenges & Opportunities

  • Better Understanding of User needs
  • Collaboration and Partnerships for better
  • utcomes
  • Better and optimal use of resources
  • Working on strengths
  • Better communication between providers

and stakeholders
