  • Modernization was needed because many of the air traffic procedures in

Southern California were decades old. While they were all safe, some were inefficient because they relied on ground-based navigation aids, which limit available flight paths.

  • Satellite-based procedures allow for more optimized routing with fixed

routes, altitudes and speeds.

  • Their precise flight tracks help keep routes de-conflicted.
  • This in turn reduces the need for controllers to vector aircraft and

reduces controller-pilot communications.

  • The modernization work that the FAA is doing nationwide is laying the

foundation for future safety and efficiency improvements.
