Gas transportation & emergency service for Wales & south west of England We are the Distribution System Operator and Architect We don’t sell gas - we transport it through our 35,000km of pipes We serve a population of circa 7.5m – covering almost 20% of UK System flexibility increasing - 19 Biomethane & 33 local generation plants We deploy 58 GWh of storage daily = 4 million Tesla Powerwalls We respond to more than 80,000 gas emergencies a year

Biomethane in WWU

  • 19 sites connected,

– Booked capacity equivalent to the demand from over 140,000 houses – 3 WwTW/STC

  • 9 additional sites with booked

capacity due to connect before Jan 2020

Incentivisation

  • No new FIT or RO
  • Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)

– Tariff Guarantees – connected before 31st January 2020 – RHI closes 2021

  • Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO)

– Renewable Transport Fuel Certificate (RTFCs)

Biomethane is fundamental to all decarbonisation scenarios

THE FUTURE AND OPPORTUNITIES

slide-10
SLIDE 10

Biomethane and WwTW & STC

10

  • 49 Waste water treatment works

and sludge treatment centres within 100m of a >2barg gas main

– 246 within 1km

  • WwTW and STCs locations

generally align to best gas demands

– High population densities → large volumes of feedstock & large gas demands

slide-11
SLIDE 11

Future developments

  • Power to gas – opportunity for co-located wind and

solar

– Biomethanation of waste CO2 or future addition of hydrogen

  • Production of higher chain alkanes from AD

– Reduced propanation costs / higher value products

  • Flexible production

– Enhanced

  • In grid compression and smart pressure control to

create additional capacity

Getting connected

1. Initial enquiry - submitted to the Network Entry/Exit Team to determine closest possible connection point within a reasonable radius that will likely accept the requested load. 2. Capacity study – This is a more in-depth analysis on the connection point and is chargeable to the customer. It involves looking at flow data if available and running the models at peak and low demand. 3. Acceptance – customer signs acceptance letter and seeks financial backing.

Summary

  • WwTW and STC are ideally situated for biomethane

to grid

  • Bio-resources are a key feedstock and great potential

for biomethane to grid now and in the future

  • AD and biomethane are fundamental to the achieving

decarbonisation across a number of sectors

13

Let’s work together to maximise the potential for bio-resources
