THE VIEW FROM THE LIBRARY

  • Library workflows and the publication lifecycle
  • How library interacts with different stakeholders at different points
  • Library support processes for Green and Gold OA
  • Support mechanisms and how these differ across institutions
  • Anomalies and pain points
  • Highlighting complexities and areas which remain difficult for authors

PUBLISHER PREPAYMENT ACCOUNTS

Why set up a prepayment account?

Tend to be used by larger, more research- intensive institutions (though some such institutions do not use) Motivations and perceived benefits:

  • Simpler APC process for authors
  • Reduce institutional administration
  • Obtain discount on APCs

Why not?

May not be practical for smaller, less research- intensive institutions Concern that these mask true costs of Gold Perception and reality of prepayment accounts:

  • Tie up funds; risk of not benefitting
  • Increased complexity of OA approval and

management processes for OA team

  • Different processes can result in confusion

and more work for authors

REPORTING TO STAKEHOLDERS

#UKSGSeminar @UoMLib_Lucy

slide-17
SLIDE 17

Confusing submission forms, publishing systems or processes Can result in:

  • Missed opportunities to select or arrange OA
  • Failure to comply with OA requirements
  • Author frustration
  • Additional admin for OA team & authors

PAIN POINTS

Complex publisher processes + Author misunderstanding

Community seeks collective, proactive solutions

#UKSGSeminar @UoMLib_Lucy

slide-18
SLIDE 18

Poor communication to authors

  • Sometimes no prompt

to take action on OA at acceptance

  • Co-authors may not

receive AAM or info

  • Manuscripts often not

labelled as AAM

  • Labels may not be

accurate, e.g. proof when really AAM

  • Self-archiving policies

vary between journals, even by same publisher

Missed opportunities to simplify

  • Pubs could send copy of

AAM to Publication Router

  • Provide DOI on

acceptance (some pubs can, why can’t all?)

  • Include all crucial dates
  • n VoR

Terms of sharing unclear

PAIN POINTS

Green Open Access

#UKSGSeminar @UoMLib_Lucy

slide-19
SLIDE 19

Unclear licence

  • ptions
  • Multiple options

confuse authors

  • Preferable to limit
  • ptions when funding

known

  • Differ in reality from

publisher guidance (e.g. IEEE)

  • Time-consuming and

confusing (e.g. Elsevier, OUP)

  • OA decision at

submission for some hybrid (e.g. IOP)

Non-compliance despite efforts

  • Funding not always

acknowledged in VoR as in AAM

  • Chasing required to

ensure Gold OA, or correct licence

  • Even when pub has

committed to WT’s requirements

Difficult workflows

PAIN POINTS

Gold Open Access
