M ethod of sacrificing

Note: Each particular kind of offering had variations on some steps of this

  • procedure. This is a guide to the sort of things which took place most frequently.
  • Offerer had to be ceremonially clean (e.g. Lev chs. 11 to 15) before offering.
  • Animal was brought to the Sanctuary, and into the court/ courtyard (1:1-3).
  • Animal was inspected for blemishes (1:3).
  • Offerer placed his hand on the animal’s head (1:4).
  • Offerer killed the animal (1:5a).
  • Priest would capture the animal’s blood in a receptacle,

and then splashed some of it onto the altar (1:5b).

  • Animal was usually skinned, and often cut into portions (1:6,8).
  • The portions were washed (1:9).
  • The whole animal or portions were placed on the altar and burnt up (1:8,9).
