  1. November 14 th , 2018 Attn: Suzan Saykam Co-Chair PAC General Gordon Elementary School 2268 Bayswater St. Vancouver BC, V6K 4P5 Dear Suzan, We are pleased to provide a proposal to deliver valuable and relevant training to your students, staff, and parents. Safer Schools Together (SST) has been recognized by all levels of government for our development of effective and innovative strategies that ensure safe and caring school communities. SST is the Subject Matter Expert for the Province of British Columbia, and other jurisdictions throughout North America in the areas of Violence Threat Risk Assessment, Trauma Response and complex digital behaviour. SST designs and implements comprehensive professional development sessions tailored for school administration, law enforcement, students, staff, parents, community groups and multi-disciplinary teams. SST provides training to law enforcement and school teams to recognize the roles that social media and content play in the evolution of serious violence, suicidal ideation, religiosity and radicalization. This training is unique as tools and resources are provided to build capacity and sustainability. SST recently developed and implemented “Cyberbullying Training” for justice system personnel for the Depar tment of Justice Canada. To complement the training regarding the evolution of technology, and threats involving technology, SST provides Digital Threat Assessment (DTA) training which is a comprehensive open source digital mining training to ensure accurate assessment of online threat related behaviour and to complement behavioural threat assessments. This training is unique in both Canada and the US. This training focuses on building capacity and sustainability in dealing with the constant evolution of social media platforms. 2. Scope of Service Student Presentation Social Media Awareness, Digital Footprints, and Cyberbullying (One 60-minute session) It is recommended that grades 5-7, 8-10, and 11-12 be presented separately as the information presented gets more comprehensive as the students get older. The student presentation will focus on lessons and content that is most applicable to this particular age group. This presentation will cover all things digital, from digital citizenship and how to be a good digital citizen to the criminal consequences of cyberbullying. Some of the most prominent concerns currently surrounding student’s use of social networking sites and smartphones will be discussed. Topics covered will include: how to practice netiquette (online etiquette), how to recognize and respond to cyberbullying, the criminal and social consequences of cyberbullying behaviour and the possession and distribution of intimate images (sexting), self-peer exploitation, digital media habits and oversharing, digital addiction, piracy and plagiarism. At this stage in their school career they hopefully should be very familiar with their digital footprint online and how this is a representation of their real and online selves. Everything they post online will be public, permanent, and searchable. This is now more important than ever and we know that university and college admissions staff as well as prospective employers are now researching applicant s’ online lives before they even consider a resume or transcript. Social media should be a platform for students to showcase their interests, skills, and accomplishments. Real world examples will be shown of the detrimental effect that social media and online behaviour has had Canadian youth moving forward with their lives. The illusion of anonymity online will be spoken to in cautioning students from misrepresenting themselves online and creating false profiles. Geo-locational settings will be covered as well the dangers of social media and cell phone misuse. Finally, a discussion of personal media habits will engage the audience and prompt them to reflect on their own digital lives and how it is affecting them. 14788 Russell Ave, White Rock BC V4B 2P2 • Phone : 604 560-2285 Toll Free: 1-855-677-3720 kelly@saferschoolstogether.com

  3. SCOPE B: Staff Presentation Social Media Awareness/Management to Ensure Safe & Caring School Communities (One 90-minute presentation) Now more than ever the digital and social media world has flowed into the classroom and school environment. This changing landscape has had positives for learning but has also had a multitude of negative implications on a school’s culture and climate. Staff and student safety online will be discussed while covering how to recognize and respond to cyberbullying as well as other important topics around digital footprint. As frontline professionals, the use of social media outside the classroom undoubtedly follows our students into the classroom and it is key to maintain periodic and relevant education of evolving youth trends online. As staff members and parents, it is important to maintain baseline levels of knowledge in relation to how technology and social media are currently used by our students and children. Best practices and current policies from the field will be shared including staff's professional and personal use of social media as well guidelines around interacting with students online. SCOPE C: Parent Presentation Social Media Awareness, Digital Footprints, and Cyberbullying (One 90-minute presentation) The parent presentation will focus on all things digital. Your child has now entered into their digital media lives, where cell phone ownership doubles, video game use explodes, and they dive into the world of social media and hypertexting. Your child is rapidly developing their personal identity with cell phone in hand and you need to be prepared. Family rules, parental controls and developing a family tech plan will be outlined as well as recommendations for monitoring your teen’s digital life. As a parent, you must lead the charge as a digital role model and help your child develop a strong digital citizenship foundation while reminding them that their digital footprint is a reflection of their real and online selves. At this age, they will encounter situations that will challenge their independence, including cyberbullying (and more commonly – cyberexclusion), the dangers of anonymity, privacy, sharing intimate images, and inappropriate websites, and you need to be there to provide support and guidance during this critical period. Finally, to better equip you for your digital parenting strategy, a snapshot of the current trends and concerning apps will be provided. 14788 Russell Ave, White Rock BC V4B 2P2 • Phone : 604 560-2285 Toll Free: 1-855-677-3720 kelly@saferschoolstogether.com
