  2. COMMON NAME: Pignut hickory SPECIES: Carya glabra LOCATION: 2700 8 th St S SCORE: 256 CIRCUMFERENCE: 164” COMMENTS: Very large, spreading multi- trunk pignut. Measured about 3.5’ above base. Only 6 points below current County Champion; could be listed as Co-Champion. Good health, no visible issues. VISIBILITY: Rear property.

  3. COMMON NAME: Red maple SPECIES: Acer rubrum LOCATION: 6012 27 th Rd N SCORE: 276 CIRCUMFERENCE: 195” COMMENTS: Huge girth, low-branching red maple. Reasonably good condition: one hollow spot visible on one trunk. Had some recent pruning and also lost some spread due to power lines. VISIBILITY: Front property.

Owners say they have enjoyed watching this tree grow for 51 years of living at this location. Excellent condition, regular arborist care. VISIBILITY: Front property.

COMMON NAME: Chestnut oak SPECIES: Quercus montana LOCATION: Upton Hill Regional Park SCORE: 190.5 CIRCUMFERENCE: 123” COMMENTS: One of the five largest trees in this park, located near the service road entrance to Wilson Blvd. Friends of Upton Hill Park group call it majestic. Good condition; large, sealed branch stubs on trunk. VISIBILITY: In park.

Rough old bark, large walnut crop in fall 2017. Measured in 2017; not submitted until this year. VISIBILITY: In park.

  13. COMMON NAME: Southern red oak SPECIES: Quercus falcata LOCATION: 900 N Livingston St SCORE: 296 CIRCUMFERENCE: 180” COMMENTS: Shades both N Livingston St and 9 th St N. Good condition with evidence of recent pruning of low branches. VISIBILITY: Front property.

COMMON NAME: Willow oak SPECIES: Quercus phellos LOCATION: 4908 17 th St N SCORE: 246 CIRCUMFERENCE: 159” COMMENTS: Tree has about the lowest score possible score for approval based on size, but owner submitted statement about neighborhood appreciation for this tree. It provides shade to 4-6 homes, habitat for wildlife, and dominates tree canopy. VISIBILITY: Rear property.

  17. COMMON NAME: American elm SPECIES: Ulmus americana LOCATION: 905 S Randolph St SCORE: 240.75 CIRCUMFERENCE: 149” COMMENTS: This is also an approved Specimen Tree. Located at the top of hill to the left side of the house; dominates canopy with a substantial spread for this species. Very good condition with regular chemical applications for Dutch Elm Disease applied bi-annually. VISIBILITY: Side property.

  19. COMMON NAME: Japanese cedar SPECIES: Cryptomeria japonica LOCATION: 2156 Military Rd SCORE: 141 CIRCUMFERENCE: 69” COMMENTS: In back yard of townhouse behind Cherrydale library. Very good condition. Almost 6’ in circumference and 57’ tall. VISIBILITY: Rear property.

This tree is largest documented in Arlington, although there is only one other. Largest in VA scores 159. VISIBILITY: Rear property.

  22. COMMON NAME: American sycamore SPECIES: Platanus occidentalis LOCATION: Zachary Taylor Park SCORE: 60.5 CIRCUMFERENCE: 13.5” COMMENTS: Young tree with a story. Nominators noticed it down after a storm, lying across Zachary Taylor trail. They put soil around the roots and supported it with a nearby block of wood. They noticed others securing the tree later, and finally they saw that the County had secured it with stakes and ties. Now the tree is sound and strong. VISIBILITY: In park.

  23. COMMON NAME: Japanese maple SPECIES: Acer japonica LOCATION: 6248 Lee Highway SCORE: 117 CIRCUMFERENCE: 84” COMMENTS: Tree is at right front of property and is in good condition, with a prominent view from Lee Highway. VISIBILITY: Front property.

  24. COMMON NAME: Southern magnolia SPECIES: Magnolia grandiflora LOCATION: 5829 5 th St N SCORE: 144.5 CIRCUMFERENCE: 79” COMMENTS: Large magnolia in Bluemont neighborhood. Very good condition. VISIBILITY: Front property.

  25. COMMON NAME: Silver maple SPECIES: Acer saccharinum LOCATION: 6048 9 th St N SCORE: 231 CIRCUMFERENCE: 146” COMMENTS: This tree is 30 points smaller than the smallest silver maple previously approved. It also has had substantial pruning and is not attractive. VISIBILITY: Front property.

  26. COMMON NAME: Silver maple SPECIES: Acer saccharinum LOCATION: 708 N Ivy St SCORE: 189.5 CIRCUMFERENCE: 126” COMMENTS: This tree is even smaller than the last, and is not in good condition. Although the owner submitted nice comments about wildlife in the tree, it is just not large enough. VISIBILITY: Front property.

COMMON NAME: Northern red oak SPECIES: Quercus rubra LOCATION: 1705 N Stafford St SCORE: 178 CIRCUMFERENCE: 98” COMMENTS: Enthusiastic owners nominated three trees in their yard, plus the tree on Zachary Taylor trail. This is a nice, tall, straight red oak, but is 70 points smaller than the lowest approved northern red oak. VISIBILITY: Front property.

  28. COMMON NAME: Willow oak SPECIES: Quercus phellos LOCATION: Wakefield HS SCORE: 170 CIRCUMFERENCE: 104” COMMENTS: This tree is both too small and in too poor condition for approval. It has much die-back and substantial dead wood. VISIBILITY: School property.
