Beginning of “this age”

The beginning of “the age to come” Jesus Christ: “on account of whom He (God) made the ages”

The “Secret of God” (That’s what the Bible calls it).

• 1 Corinthians 2:1 - NJB 1 Corinthians 2:1 Now when I came to you,

brothers, I did not come with any brilliance of oratory or wise argument to announce to you the mystery of God (the Secret of God mustayrion in the best Greek texts – cf. NIV, etc.).

• Colossians 2:2 (NJB) - NJB Colossians 2:2 It is all to bind them together

in love and to encourage their resolution until they are rich in the assurance of their complete understanding and have knowledge of the mystery of God (the Secret of God)

The “Secret of God” (That’s what I call it…).

The real “expectation of the Jews”

• Luke 2: 38 and Luke 24: 21 give a picture of what Jews were expecting

to happen in the first century Palestine. How did that view develop?

• Theocratic Kingdom (they couldn’t buy into that so they got Judges)
• Davidic Kingdom (the Israelites got “kings like the nations” (1 Samuel 8:1-7)
• Promised New Covenant (cause the old one wasn’t going to last)
• Israel scattered to the “four corners of the earth” (remember your ANEC – Ancient Near

East Cosmology); they will be brought back (Isaiah 11:12)

• A time of “great tribulation” (the “time of trouble” – cf. Matthew 24: 21 and

Jeremiah 30:7)…but they’ll get through it

• “someday my prince will come” (A King will rule from Jerusalem)
• Israel is the Bride…
• Finally a “new heaven and a new earth” (2 Peter 3:13)

Jesus wasn’t the first Christian…he wasn’t even God!

the “times of refreshing from the Lord” (Act3:19)

• Jesus did, however, visit Paul on the road to Damascus (Acts 26: 12-16); a

“heavenly vision”.

• And Jesus added to his own RED LETTERS by giving Paul the revelation of

the Secret (I Timothy 1:12 and Galatians 1:11,12)

The Day of Pentecost – 28 CE

• NJB Acts 2:3,4 and there appeared to

them tongues as of fire; these separated and came to rest on the head of each of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak different languages as the Spirit gave them power to express themselves. This wasn’t prophetic…Hmmmmm; maybe we should pay attention???

Understanding of the Body of Christ was a Progressive Revelation…

• Peter is not the Pope at Pentecost
• No knowledge at all of what had happened (Joel, etc.)
• Jew only (just read the record)…they were “the ones”
• Gentiles (those “dogs”) “speak in tongues” (Acts 10, 11)
• Paul, a former Pharisee, starts to get some things…progressively:
• The Jew “first and also to the Gentile”
• Rom. 1:16; 2:9,10
• “The Gentiles have shared in their spiritual things”
• Romans 15:27
• And they were “grafted in” (wild olive tree)
• Romans 11: 17-24
• “neither Jew nor Greek, bond nor free, male nor female”
• Gal. 3:28
• “salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles”
• Acts 28: 28
• “Jew and Gentile fellowheirs and of the same body”
• Ephesians 3:6; Col. 3:11
• OMG, this is “hard to understand” (2 Peter 3:16)

Will you allow the Secret of God to remain a secret?

• Be bold “in him”
• Operate your ministry (be the best you God has on this planet!)
• Stop making excuses
• Study? to show yourself an egghead for Jesus?
• A prune?
• …that would be “approved of God”…the Greek word assumes “study”
• Teach, teach, teach… “good doctrine”
• Be coachable (you are not “all that”…he is!)
• Give where you can, when you can; SEEK TO GIVE!
• Don’t get talked out of things. Search the Scriptures (re-search and research)
• Be gentle and patient; “as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone”
• Put on all the armor of God (no one can do it for you)

Why “gird your loins”?

Because we’re called on to fight against other denominations and other factions…especially waskily theologians who can’t put two sentences together….and beat them over the head with the Bible!!!
