Project Overview

➢ 13 Work Areas – From Leverett Pond to Boylston Street Bridge

  • Areas 1 – 12 includes 90,000CY of sediment removal
  • Areas 1, 2, 4, & 6-12 Excavate “In-the-Wet” – Allow free flow conditions at all times
  • Areas 3 & 5 – Excavate “In-the-Dry” – Divert river using natural topography, and allow free flow

conditions at all times

  • Charter’s approach disturbs 1,409SF less wetlands than originally contemplated during the project

design phase

  • Area 13 includes flood protection wall at Boston Fire Department Fire Control Center
  • Eradicate phragmites in Backbay Fens and Riverway areas
  • Plant emergent wetland/upland plants, shrubs and trees
  • Installing wildlife habitats
  • Protection of existing vegetation and trees is high priority

➢ General Sequencing

  • Areas 1 -6 will be completed stages with multiple crews
  • Example: While Charter is excavating in Area 2,

Charter will be preparing/setting up Area 3 and Landscaping in Area 1 creating a “train”. Upon completion of Excavation in Area 2 the “train” will move up to the next work area.

  • Temporary Fence will be taken down in each area

as restoration is complete. On going maintenance will occur for 2 years after completion of each area.

  • Completion in Areas 1 through 6 is expected by the

end of 2021 – less landscaping due to timing and planting windows.

  • Areas 7-13 are continuous and mostly will be occupied

from 2020 until 2023. Same as Areas 1-6, temporary fence will be removed from Areas 7-13 to the greatest extent possible as areas are complete to minimize impacts to the public.

  • Operations in Areas 1-6 will happen concurrently with

Areas 7-13
