MT1001 – What’s it all about?
- This course aims to give a secure basis in elementary calculus,
- to give the ability of tackle mathematics needed in physics, chemistry, economics, geophys-
ical sciences, psychology research, etc...
- It also opens you the door to the module MT1002 if you want to study more advanced
mathematical topics in the future.
- This course will review material you might have seen at School and will develop from this.

Organisation of the course
- Lectures: Every day at 9am in lecture theatre D in the Mathematical Institute.
- Tutorials: Once a week, attendance is compulsory. Starts in week 2. Groups will be organ-
ised this week.
- Microlabs: The room is booked for the course on Tuesdays 3pm and Thursdays 4pm.

Assessment
Your achievements on this module will be assessed by three means:
- Microlabs Projects (10% of the final grade).
⊲ You will be given 3 projects during the term.
- Class Tests (20% of the final grade).
⊲ One test on the 24th of October (10%) ⊲ One test on the 29th of November (10%)
- Final Exam in December (70% of the final grade).

Advice on studying
- Organise your time and keep up with the course. It does not need a huge amount of time
if tackled systematically.
- Attend all lectures and take careful, legible notes.
- If you have problems, ask your tutor or the relevant lecturer for help. Do not leave it till
the day before the exam.

Tutorials
- Attendance obligatory.
- Attempt all questions and hand your work in to your tutor, even if you are unhappy with
your solution. Your tutor will tell you when she/he expects to receive your work weekly.
- Tutors will try to identify problems and sort them out.
- Don’t be shy. Ask your tutor to go over things again if you do not understand. Your tutor
is there to help, not to pass judgment on your work.
