THE HOPE OF MOURNING

MATTHEW 5:4

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”

MOURNING IS A NECESSARY PART OF THE CHRISTIAN LIFE.

MOURNING, HOWEVER, IS NOT THE END OF THE BELIEVER’S LIFE.

No matter how much a believer may go through sorrow or suffer for his faith in this life,

HOPE is never extinguished.

To mourn is something that follows of necessity from being POOR in SPIRIT. Poverty in spirit provides the INTELLECTUAL UNDERSTANDING of spiritual bankruptcy. Mourning in a particular sense supplies the EMOTIONAL FEELINGS of SPIRITUAL BANKRUPTCY.

TRUE RELIGION

according to the Bible is NOT a choice between

INTELLECTUAL UNDERSTANDING

• r EMOTIONAL FEELINGS.

It is a COMPOUND of BOTH.

KNOWLEDGE gives birth to EMOTIONS.

TRUE FAITH

should have both LIGHT and HEAT, because INTELLECTUALISM will only lead to DEAD ORTHODOXY!

EMOTIONALISM, however, will only lead to

MISGUIDED FANATICISM.

We need both LIGHT and HEAT.

TRUE RELIGION

according to the Bible is NOT a choice between

KNOWLEDGE gives birth to EMOTIONS.

The GODLY REMNANT of Jews during Jesus’ day wept because of HUMILIATION brought about by Roman domination because of their NATIONAL sins. Similar situations in the past had occurred like the Assyrian captivity and the Babylonian captivity.

THE GODLY ALWAYS MOURNED FOR THE SIN OF THEIR NATION.

The GODLY REMNANT of Jews during Jesus’ day wept because of HUMILIATION brought about by Roman domination because of their NATIONAL sins. Similar situations in the past had occurred like the Assyrian captivity and the Babylonian captivity.

Oh that my head were waters and my eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!

JEREMIAH 9:1

The Lord said to him, “Go through the midst of the city, even through the midst of Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and groan over all the abominations which are being committed in its midst.”

EZEKIEL 9:4

My eyes shed streams of water, because they do not keep Your law.

Jesus, who is the most powerful man who had ever lived, WEPT OPENLY. “JESUS WEPT.” John 11:35

WHY DID JESUS WEEP?

• a. Jesus wept because of Israel’s

lostness and unbelief.

41 When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and wept over it, 42

saying, “If you had known in this day, even you, the things which make for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes. 43 “For the days will come upon you when your enemies will throw up a barricade against you, and surround you and hem you in on every side, 44 and they will level you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”

WHY DID JESUS WEEP?

• a. Jesus wept because of Israel’s

lostness and unbelief.

• b. Our Lord wept at the grave of
• Lazarus. He saw this horrid, ugly, foul

things called sin which had come into life and introduced death into life and had upset life and made life unhappy.

APPLICATION

• We must mourn for the LOST

(unsaved loved ones).

• We must mourn for the state of the

world (sin’s harmful consequences - wars, deterioration of nations, immorality).

• We must weep for the backslidden.

The expression of sorrow as a result of persecution for one’s faith or sorrow for national and individual sins and its negative consequences.

The Greek word used here is πενθέω (pentheo) which speaks of the STRONGEST, most SEVERE, DEEPEST, most HEART-FELT GRIEF and was generally reserved for grieving over the death of a loved one.

• A man mourns because he has some understanding of what sin means to

God, of God’s abhorrence and hatred of it. It stabs the heart of God.

• A man mourns because he discovers war in his members and he hates it and

mourns because of it.

IT IS ONLY THOSE WHO ARE GENUINE CHRISTIANS WHO CAN TRULY MOURN IN A SPIRITUAL AND BIBLICAL WAY.

If you are, then that speaks of a REAL RELATIONSHIP with Christ.
