Nopphol Pausawasdi (Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol Univ. , Thailand) Koji Okamura (Research Institute for Information Technology, Kyushu Univ., Japan) We are not medical doctors!

We (Nopphol and Okamura) have been working together more than 8 years. We used Polycom between SIRIRAJ Hospital and Kyushu Univ Hospital for a case study (not conference) via SINET 45Mbps international ATM link in Jun. 2005. We worked for this configuration in advance and this is the beginning of our collaboration.

Motivation

  • Issues of the current live based educational system (DVTS or Vidyo etc) to

the telemedicine deployment for Small hospitals

  • Scheduling between teachers and students
  • Excellent Engineering Staffs
  • New Devices
  • SD ‐> HD ‐> 4K
  • Patients Privacies
  • Broadband
  • Done by Vidyo
  • What should be remained from the existing system
  • Interactive commutations between teachers and students
  • Free of charge

Solution 1: On‐Demand Educational System with SNS

  • Asynchronous communications between teachers and students
  • Teachers can upload educational contents at any time.
  • Students can download educational contents at any time.
  • SNS
  • Provides authentications
  • Fast Asynchronous Communications

Solution 2: Cloud based Educational System

  • Independent from physical device
  • Easy adaptation against the new device
  • No necessary exchanging of faces
  • No capture device on students side
  • Easy to use
  • No necessary special Engineers
  • User Authentications Features

Medical live demonstrations

  • Medical live demonstrations, such as live surgery, are the most

preferable technique applied in many medical conferences in order to share knowledge.

video resolution

  • Digital Video (DV) and High Definition (HD) video resolution are used

in the telemedicine activities in order regarding to the development

  • f television monitor technologies along with development of medical

equipments.

high‐speed internet

  • high‐speed internet is required in order to conduct HD video

resolution into telemedicine system

Ultrahigh Definition (UHD)

  • Recently, video resolution quality has been upgraded to Ultrahigh

Definition (UHD) which provide better resolution than HD up to 4 and 8 times. This will be equipped to medical equipments in the near future.

Two resolutions are defined as UHDTV: 4K UHDTV (2160p) is 3840 pixels wide by 2160 pixels tall (8.3 megapixels), which is four times as many pixels as 1920 × 1080 (2.1 megapixels). 8K UHDTV (4320p) is 7680 pixels wide by 4320 pixels tall (33.2 megapixels), which is sixteen times as many pixels as current 1080p HDTV,

  • On 11 December Waag Society, SURFnet and UMCU will organize the pilot event Future Operations. For the

first time in the world we will stream live footage in 4K from the surgery room to a lecture room. For medical students and professionals this could be a huge advantage, and with 4K live streaming we are making this happen at the highest level.

Discussion and Project Status

  • Free of Charge
  • Necessary to find Good Business Model
  • Getting Money from the conversation records between teachers and students
  • Our Proposal is not replacement for current great live system but for

deployments of telemedicine benefits to small hospitals.

  • We have Proposed to JSPS (The Japan Society for the Promotion of

Science ) and NRCT (National Research Council of Thailand).

  • On‐Demand System by Cloud with SNS
  • 4K
  • If our proposal is accepted, the project will be started after Apr. 2014.
