Today you are going to understand the significance of rainforests. How do I know if I have been successful in understanding the lesson? I will know which group of people rainforests matter to and why. I will understand reasons for and against deforestation I will understand the impact of deforestation
Have your paper and pencil ready.Why are rainforests important? Rainforests are often called the lungs of the planet for their role in absorbing carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, and producing oxygen, upon which all animals depend for survival. Rainforests also stabilise our climate, are home to incredible amounts of plants and wildlife, and produce nourishing rainfall all around the planet.
BUT they are being destroyed!
This is called ‘deforestation’ and humans are the main cause of this. We are cutting down rainforests for many reasons, including:
- wood for timber and making fires;
- agriculture for farms;
- land for poor farmers who don’t have anywhere else to live;
- grazing land for cattle;
- pulp for making paper;
- road construction; and
- extraction of minerals and energy.
Is deforestation bad for everyone?
