Information is considered to be in the public domain if it has been published, is on public record or is accessible by an interested member of the public.

Case Studies Interactive Exercise • Split into smaller groups • Six scenarios to consider in the next 30 Minutes • Each group to discuss each scenario then ‘plot it’ on the Misuse of Information Spectrum using Post Its • We’ll then discuss each scenario as a whole group • Make a note of anything you would like to raise in the full group discussion
Scenario 1 A tennis player has undergone physiotherapy to help with a new injury that is seriously threatening his ability to play in an important qualifying match in two days time. His usual physio has suggested using an alternative therapist to treat the injury in a last ditch attempt to attain fitness. The alternative therapist places bets on the player to lose the match.
Scenario 2 A trader working for an on-line bookmaker notices suspicious betting patterns on a horse race taking place in three days time. Betsy’s Bow has been the clear favourite. However, a significant number of large bets have placed on another horse to win. The accounts are held by punters known to have links to Betsy’s Bow’s yard. The trader alerts his manager about the unusual betting. The trader then places wagers with an independent betting exchange, laying the favourite.
Scenario 3 An unseeded Badminton player unexpectedly reaches the final of an international tournament. She tells her husband to place a bet on her opponent to win the match. The unseeded player then goes on to win the tournament.
Scenario 4 A football player from Team B overhears four of his team mates discussing an agreement they have made with the manager of another club, Team A. The Team B players have agreed with the manager of the Team A that they will aim to lose their next fixture, due to take place the following weekend The player tells his best friend to place bets on Team A to win, handing over money to be used for the wagers. The player takes no further action.
Scenario 5 A betting trader, a major fan of eSports, notices that two eSports players, Apple and Orange, have placed large bets on a match between the highest ranked eSports player, Peach, who is playing the low ranked Plum. They have placed large bets on Plum to win the match. The trader does not inform his employer that he has seen this activity. The trader places a bet with another operator on Plum to win the match.
Scenario 6 A top ranking snooker player injures his knuckles whilst playing conkers with his kids, just before he is due to play in a major international tournament. His son posts a picture on Facebook of his Dads bruised knuckles.
