Positive Deviants • Positive Deviants: Are individuals who have the same resources, challenges, and influences as their peers, yet have approached a problem differently using out of the box and innovative thinking. As a result, they have achieved positive outcomes related to the problem at hand, where their peer’s have not.

  4. What is a World Café? • A method for creating a living network of collaborative dialogue around questions that are important to our work • It assumes that people already have within them the wisdom and creativity needed • Resource: www.theworldcafe.com

World Café Process: • Generates input, shares knowledge, stimulates innovative thinking, and explores action possibilities around real life issues and questions • Engages people in authentic conversation, whether they are meeting for the first time, or are in established relationships • Explores key strategic challenges or opportunities in depth

  7. World Café Instructions • Gather into groups of four, moving your chairs as much as possible so that you’re facing each other • Meet and briefly introduce each other • Decide who will be recorder and who will serve as table hostess

Table Host Duties • The recorder will use colored markers to – take note of key words and discoveries, or – draw symbols to represent ideas – capture conclusions and overall themes • Remain at the table when other leave, and welcome travelers from other tables • Share the essence of the previous conversation at the start of round 2.

World Café Process • There will be 2 questions poised for dialogue • Each question will be discussed in 2 rounds • Each round will be 10 minutes • At the end of round 1, chime and hostess will remain, all others move to new tables. At chime, hostess will give overview of previous discussion and round 2 will begin (10 minutes)

  10. World Café Process • At end of round 2, chime will signify time to summarize learning on post it notes. (5 min) • EVERYONE Moves to new table to begin Question 2. • We will repeat above steps, ie 2 rounds and one summary round.

Middle Manager Nurse survey • Biggest challenge: competing priorities, time management, balancing work/personal life • Balance between leading unit and managing tilts toward managing, less time leading. • Nurse managers rate themselves higher on the thriving scale than their staff. General concentration for both groups in surviving (5- 6).

Positive Deviant Nurse Manager • Julie Detrick (Panelist): Julie Detrick, MSN, RN, is currently a nurse manager at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center – The James Comprehensive Cancer Center. She has been at The James since 2011 where she is successfully managing a 411- bed medical-surgical oncology unit. Before coming to The James, Julie was the Director of Clinical Services at a 101 bed long-term acute care hospital.

  19. Positive Deviant Nurse Manager • Chenese Nicholas (Panelist): Chenese Nicholas is a Nurse Manager at St Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, Connecticut. She is also a part of the implementation team for Relationship-Based Care at St Vincent’s, the current chair of the Results Council and a facilitator for Re-Igniting the Spirit of Caring.
