The Gold Standard in academia…. ….is publication of research findings in scholarly journals And how do we assess the quality or importance of these scholarly journals?

By name dropping?

"I had a patient a number of years ago, in Boston — I wrote about the case in the New England Journal of Medicine. It was a girl the same age as your patient here. She was walking to the university when someone shot her with a

  • crossbow. The arrow entered at the outside edge of her left eyebrow and went

straight through her head, exiting from almost the middle of the back of her neck." "And she survived?"

By holding a Press Conference?

How do we quantitate the value of the scholarly journals?

Journal Impact Factor IF for 2015 = A/B

A = number of papers published in the Journal in 2013 & 2014 B = number of times those papers were cited in indexed scholarly journals in 2015

  • Most journals have an IF of 1-5, meaning

that if they publish 100 papers in a 2 year period, they are cited 100-500 times

  • Online junk journals, proliferating and

profitable, with dodgy peer-review, are about IF 0.3, meaning….

  • Super journals, eg Nature, Science, Cell,

have IF ca 30

  • Some Chairs insist their Faculty achieve

8 IFs per year

The online journals, open access, “peer reviewed” with page charges up to $1000

  • Titles with variations on the theme of

Obstetrics, Gynecology, International, Research, Open, Journal, Review…. (n=5000)

  • Consider “Cogent Medicine” (n=50,000)

Possible synonyms: Compelling, Conclusive, Convincing, Decisive, Effective, Forceful, Persuasive, Satisfying, Strong, Telling….

  • Add country of orign to title: n= 10 mill, or 107

For NEJM, IF is 56 So, if NEJM published 100 papers in 2013 & 2014, the total citations for all of them was 5,600!
