 What is the Common Core (CC)?  What is CC Mathematics?  What’s the difference between math programs from the past and CC-aligned math programs?  What does it mean for students?  How does Manhasset address CC math programs?  How can I best support my child with their math work?

 State-led effort coordinated by the Council of Chief State School officers & the National Governors Association  Goal: To provide a single set of clear and consistent educational standards in math and English language arts that states can share and voluntarily adopt: What should all students know and be able to do in English language arts and mathematics, pre-K through 12?  To help our students perform at consistently high levels from school to school, district-to-district and state-to-state  To better prepare our students and country to compete globally and for all our students to be College or Career Ready

How Does CC Mathematics Differ from the Past?  A set mathematical practices K-12  A set of mathematical standards (expectations) at each grade level (more rigor with each grade)  Fewer, more central standards, building core understandings and linking mathematical concepts to real-world skills  Moving away from the traditional, “A mile wide, and an inch deep” curriculum and mode of instruction  Schools and districts continue to determine the curriculum

1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 4. Model with mathematics. 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 6. Attend to precision. 7. Look for and make use of structure. 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Ratios and Proportional Relationships

  • Analyze proportional relationships and

use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems The Number System

  • Apply and extend previous

understandings of operations with fractions to add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers Expressions and Equations

  • Use properties of operations to

generate equivalent expressions

  • Solve real-life and mathematical

problems using numerical and algebraic expressions and equations Geometry

  • Draw, construct and describe geometrical

figures and describe the relationships between them

  • Solve real-life and mathematical problems

involving angle measure, area, surface area, and volume Statistics and Probability

  • Use random sampling to draw inferences

about a population

  • Draw informal comparative inferences

about two populations

  • Investigate chance processes and

 June 2009 – work begins on the CCSS by the Council of Chief State School Officers and the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices  June 2010 – CCSS are released  July 2010 – NYS adoption of the Common Core State Standards – to date 45 states have adopted CCSS  2011-12 School Year – schools develop curricula aligned to CCSS.  2012-13 School Year – CCSS are implemented in grades 3–8.  2013-14 School Year – CCSS are implemented in grade 9.

 EveryDay Mathematics was a rigorous math program that served Manhasset well over the past 12 years. However, the philosophy behind this spiraling program was not in line with the Common Core State Standards.  Thus, Manhasset began to research new elementary math programs.

After an extensive search, Manhasset decided to implement 2 new elementary math programs during the 2012-13 school year:  Grades K – 2: Math in Focus  Grades 3 – 6: GO Math In each subsequent year, the next grade level will move to Math in Focus. Both GO Math and Math in Focus are aligned to the CCSS, and are appropriate for Manhasset students. However, the Math in Focus program was more rigorous, and provides all students with strategies to help them become better mathematicians.

 During the 2011-12 school year, middle school math teachers examined the Common Core State Standards in Math and modified their curriculum.  The CCSS in Math and ELA were mandated for implementation during the 2012-13 school year.  NYSED provided the Module 1 for 7th grade math on May 14, 2013, and Module 2 on September 25, 2013.  After examining each module, the middle school math teachers felt their revisions were very closely aligned.

2013-14 School Year – CCSS are implemented in grade 9. Common Core Algebra “The fundamental purpose of this course is to formalize and extend the mathematic that students learned in the middle grades. Because it is built on the middle grades standards, this is a more ambitious version of Algebra I than has generally been offered.”

Modeling

“Modeling links classroom mathematics and statistics to everyday life, work, and decision-making. Modeling is the process of choosing and using appropriate mathematics and statistics to analyze empirical situations, to understand them better, and to improve decisions.”

The total age of a woman and her son is 51 years. Three years ago, the woman was eight times as old as her son. How old is her son now?

Algebraically: Woman’s Age: x Son’s Age: y x + y = 51 x - 3 = 8(y - 3) x - 3 = 8y - 24 +3 +3 x = 8y - 21

  • 8y -8y

x - 8y = -21 x + y = 51 x - 8y = -21 8( ) 8x + 8y = 408 x - 8y = -21 = 43 = 8

Son's Age is 8.
