About Macclesfield Rugby Club

  • Rugby Football was first played in Macclesfield in 1874
  • Mini and Junior Rugby formed in 1971
  • The Club had several homes in Macclesfield until Priory Park in 1980 (ground

and clubhouse)

  • 1985 founder member of Girobank Northwest League – forerunner to national

rugby

  • The Club had much success winning cup competitions at all levels, THE BLUES

becoming a semi-professional team

  • 2010 promoted into the 3rd tier, National One, finishing 4th (28th position in

English leagues)

  • Today THE BLUES sit top of National 2 and ‘should’ gain promotion back to

National One

  • 4 Senior Rugby Squads
  • 11 Mini and Junior Rugby Squads
  • 1 Colts Squad
  • 2 Junior Football Squads
  • Over 600 members of the Rugby Club
  • Up to 500 on a Saturday and 2000 on a Sunday at Priory Park
  • The facility at Priory Park is used by the community for meetings,

a variety of events, parties, beer festivals, tournaments – it is a centre for the Macclesfield and Cheshire community

Running an Amateur Club Professionally

  • In 2012 the Club appointed an Executive Committee to manage

the needs and future development of the Club

  • After consultation with members and strategic partners a long

term outline plan was put in place:
