Who are we ?  History: PwM is a National Conservation and Community Development NGO established in 1985 by staff and students at UPNG to support groups and communities who were involved in Education and Development initiatives in rural communities of PNG, PWM is guided by its Goal, Vision, Mission and Values to take on the challenges in implementing its work plans and activities with the local partners CBOs. Goal – “To mobilize, educate and equip the communities with relevant skills and resources to make informed decisions to protect and utilize their natural resources sustainably.” Vision – “Well informed, organized, motivated and self-reliant societies living in peace and harmony with their environment.” Mission – “PWM is committed to facilitate, formulate and strengthen conservation and sustainable community development efforts through education and consensus building process with effective networking and partnerships.” Motto of - “Maintaining the Dance”

What do we believe in and Values we Uphold ? “PWM strongly believes in full participation by people in developments that benefit everyone, and a development process where people are the cause of development rather than recipients and mere spectators.” PWM has five core values • Environmental stewardship : PWM believes in the protection of the environment and it’s Biodiversity. • Indigenous People : PWM promotes and values the cultures of Melanesian societies. • Community Empowerment : PWM believes in facilitating and empowering members of the community in taking the lead in their own development. • Partnerships and Networking : PWM promotes strong and effective partnership and networking with relevant stakeholders. • Transparency and Accountability : PWM promotes good governance through transparency and accountability.

  4. Project Areas in Papua New Guinea 1. Managalas Plateau Conservation Area in Northern Province of PNG with an area of 360,000 ha and declared as a Conservation Area in November, 2017. 2. Propsed Mt. Karimui Conservation Area in Simbu Province of PNG with an area of 176,000 ha and yet to be declared as Conservation Area in PNG. 3. Inaina Wildlife Management Area in Central Province of PNG with an area of 9,712.20 ha and declared as a Wildlife Management Area in March, 2017. 4. Proposed Collingwood Bay Conservation Area in Northern Province of PNG with an area of more than 650,000 ha. Yet to be declared as a Conservation Area. Programs Activities PWM implement in these four project areas 1. Biodiversity Conservation and Mapping 2. Community Empowerment 3. Education and Awareness 4. Climate Change and Reforestation 5. Sustainable Livelihood Alternatives 6. Gender Empowerment 7. Appropriate Technology 8. Capacity Building

  5. TWO EXAMPLES OF ABUSE OF PROCESS AND LOGGING ILLEGALLY IN TWO OF OUR PROJECT AREAS IN PNG. 1. Ifane Forest Clearance Authority (FCA) along the boarder of Managalas Conservation Area and 2. Inaina Timber Authority (TA) along the landuse plan area of Inaina Wildlife Management Area

IFANE FCA – Oro Province Ifane has 3 FCA Permits Malaysian Plywood and Logging Company Permit done through the Provincial Forest Management Committee • Due Diligence check on the 3 x FCA Application on land boundaries were not done properly • PNGFA never checked its GIS Mapping Database on the 3 FCAs • Other Landowners from around the area were not consulted to verify boundary at the application stage • Other Agencies of Government like Conservation Environment Protection Authority (CEPA) were not consulted. • The application process was done in secrecy and rushed • Boundary of Managalas Conservation Area was not considered (See Map)

  10. Inaina Wildlife Management Area – Illegal Logging Entry IWMA is a declared small protected area in Central province with an area of 9,712.20 Hectares. Logging has been going on around the external boundaries and more recently…encroached into the buffer zone area, at Keke designated other forest use, but not for logging

  11. Inaina WMA was declared 23 rd March 2017 During that period we encountered many instances of illegal logging done with Malaysian, Philippine and Chinese Companies based in Port Moresby under the FCA, Roadline TA and TA 1 for domestic processing etc…
