History: The a.s.b.l IZERE MUBYEYI association has been founded in November 2004 by the initiative of parents and friends of the children with different forms of disability, especially the mental handicap. Localisation : The office of the association is in Kanombe sector, Kicukiro district in Kigali City. Up to now, the activities of the association are operated in this area and a part of Gasabo district.

Target public : The association takes in charge every child who lives with disability, especially those with mental disability without any prejudice. They are 122 children, 34 in special education and 88 who take care of physiotherapy.

2 General objective: To improve the life conditions of children who live with disability in Kigali city, especially in Kicukiro district and a part of Gasabo district. Specific objectives: Strategic and specific objectives:  Giving value to the rights of children with disability in rwandan society  Promoting the blossom of children with disability and their well-being by inviting their parents to get them out of the seal, by giving them the opportunity to enjoy the appropriate psychosocioaffective conditions, the physiotherapy exercises and the activities which are adapted to their handicap  Getting for them the appropriate doctors and drugs.  Fighting ignorance, poverty and parents’shame and also making available a mutual between the members of the association.  Directing them in the centers of special and inclusive education where they can get knowledge and experiences considering their disability. Association’s organisation :  « IZERE MUBYEYI » association has already four operational organs including the General Assembly, the Executive Committee, the Consultative Council and the Commissionership on accounts. The number of ordinary and extraordinary meetings is mentioned in the Status and internal settlements.  The organs of the association are already working according to the available means which are up to now still limited.  A three-yearly action plan has been drawn up and serves as a guide for the execution of short and middle term objectives.  Each organ has his exact attributions and the process of getting decisions respects the status and settlements’ dispositions.  The methods of admission, replacement, election and thanks of ordinary members and responsible of different organs are clear as well too.  The Banks’ engagement and financial management conditions are indefinite. Main executions

• 1. Education

The Day Center which provides an education to the children with mental disabilities is already operating. The children who have same physical and intellectual capacities make a group but everyone has his individual plan of special. We have, in Izere Mubyeyi, three groups :

3  Those who have a severe handicap: some children learn everything in relation with the daily life, for example: going to the toilet themselves, speaking, recognizing, identifying and differentiating persons and things, etc.

Above children and youth are in different activities ( special education).

 Children with a moderate handicap also learn everything in relation with the daily life, for example dressing themselves correctly, washing one’s body themselves,

• etc. they also learn the language because the majority do not know to speak. They

learn the observation, the cutting up, the graphism and the initiation on lecture, calculation, drawing, etc. Above, in the left, they are learning to write, to read and calculate while in the right, they receive instructions  Children with a light handicap learn reading and writing, calculation, drawing, environment, telling stories, general manners in the society and good habits.

4  The others children with another kind of handicap are oriented in other institutions like GATAGARA for those who present a physical handicap and the blinds and in HRD for those who have deaf and dumb disability.

• 2. Culture, Sport and leisure activities

 The summer camps and walking are also organized for children. That helps them to develop their senses of observation and to feel better good.

• 3. Health

 The association gives out the sessions of physiotherapy to the children with physical handicap a twice a week.

 The epileptic children are consulted in habilitated centres like NDERA where they get treatments  Children with orthopedic problems are consulted and treated at Rilima and Gahini hospitals.  Those who have and hydrocephalic and microcephalic problems are consulted and treated at CHUK and Ruli hospitals.  A sensitization of fighting HIV/AIDS has been organized for parents and children with a light mental disability. 42 persons have been voluntary tested about HIV.

• 4. Some activities for youth with a light handicap

Disability is not inability. A young girl is doing a plac mat. She is very proud to do it.

• 5. Training of parents and children in manual activities

 A training session of parents about the taking in charge children with disability in their families has been organized several times in order to give to the parents the occasion to agree and being patient to the handicap of their children and well taking care of them.  The activity of the parents up to now is to produce the shopping baskets in stretch-back. With this activity they have idea of innovation and management of revenue generator activities.

 Some parents and the children with a light mental disability have been trained to decorate places and things.

• 6. Mobilization for authorities and sensitization for the community

The sessions of mobilization to the authorities of different sectors of Kicukiro and Gasabo districts have been organized. The same sessions of sensitization to the parents of the children with disability and the whole society in general to the rights for children and in particular for those who have a disability.

6 Partners  The effective partners of Izere Mubyeyi association are :

• Handicap international: this gives us the technical assistance and gives up the

material of physiotherapy, trainings on special education and sensitation to the parents who have children with disability.

• Liliane Fonds via Faith and Light (Foi et Lumière) : It finances for some

children from very poor families, consultations, drugs for epileptic children, surgical and orthopedic operations and hospitalization.

• National Parallelompic Committee (NPC): It gives up advices and traings to the

teachers of sport for people with disability. It also gives us some materials of children sports.

• Rhénanie Palatinat: It finances some material of professional activities for

young people with disability and manual activities for their parents.

• VSO (Voluntary Services Overseas): Sensitization for children’s rights. Global

school grant.

• Le Collectif TUBAKUNDE : This a national organisation assembles

associations and centers for children with mental handicap. Izere Mubyeyi is the

• ne of the founders.
• The association continues to benefit from the political authorities some support

like Kicukiro district, MINALOC, MINEDUC, MIGEPROF.  The association has also the potential partners like :

• French Embassy
• Germany Embassy
• Holland Embassy
• Canadian Cooperation
• UNICEF

Problems :

• No infrastructures for the center of children (classes and their equipments, …)
• Insufficient allowances for educators and physiotherapist,
• Etc.

Future visions:  Creating revenue generator activities which will support the association in different activities,  Vocational training,  Creating workshops for professional trainings for the youth with handicap in collaboration with their parents.  Promoting the revenue generator activities for parents.  Encourage parents and their children to always fight HIV/AIDS and making voluntary tests.  Looking for medical and food solutions for the HIV-positive children.  Looking for financial for the construction of building of the IZERE MUBYEYI’s center.
