TALKIN’ WITH MISTER LEE: RADIO LEGEND LEE ALAN RETURNS TO CENTER STAGE One of the pleasant surprises of Freddy Cannon’s commanding performance at the Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise was the appearance of WXYZ-AM radio legend and Walled Lake Casino host Lee Alan (nee Reicheld) as emcee. Alan, who aly facilitated the transition between the fake Marveletues and the very real and no- nonsense Cannon, touched the audience with recollections of such one-time radio colleagues as (Swingin’ Time host) Robin Seymour and the late Mickey Shorr. Alan is also celebrating the release of his autobigraphy, “Turn Your Radio On!” , which commemorates his tenure in the driver’s seat at WXYZ and his brief stint as a recording artist with the 1964 hit single, “Set Me Free” , on which he was backed by members of the Motown label artist roster. Although WXYZ and all competition were pretuy much buried by the meteoric rise of WKNR- AM in late 1963, Alan persevered with WXYZ for the next several years and has recently made availale a series of CDs that recreate a typical WXYZ Lee Alan broadcast. To be certain, radio would benefit tremendously from his return to the airwaves, although few stations in this age of consultants and narrow play lists of generic corporate rock are worthy of his remarkale gifus.
