Introduction

About me

  • Joined DLR in 2015 as a research assistant in the satellite network

department in the institute for Communication and Navigation

  • Mainly working on short code design (tailbiting convolutional codes,

turbo codes, LDPC codes, polar codes, ...)

  • In 2018 switching research interest towards code-based cryptography

with respect to post quantum cryptography

Polar codes are good for long block lengths:

  • Polar codes achieve capacity1 for block length N → ∞ under SC

decoding

  • Low decoding complexity O(N log N)

Polar codes exhibit poor performance for short/moderate block lengths:

  • Sub-optimal decoding algorithm
  • Weak distance properties

Solutions:

  • Resort to higher decoding complexity O(L · N log N): List decoding
  • Concatenate with an outer code (like CRC) to improve distance

properties

  • Combine both3 ⇒ outstanding performance in the moderate to short

block length regime Open questions:

  • How to combine both? Does it matter?
  • Which outer code to pick?
