  3. Huti - (verb) to lift, to pull upwards, to raise - (noun) uplift. Huti (working title) is a site specifjc artwork to commemorate the Kaikōura Earthquake for the Kaikōura Community. Proposed for the Waiopuka Mick’s Bay Headland opposite Fyffe House, it integrates sculpture, poetry, design and landscape architecture in direct response to this sites signifjcant seismic uplift seen here in the distinct reef formations. The work also refmects the rich cultural history of this site. It aims to create a small public park-like space integrating the future walking trail between town and Point Keen. Concepts for the project began in 2017 when Mayor Winston Gray approached me with an opportunity to prepare a proposal to secure earmarked recovery funds through Lotteries. However the initial proposals were not well enough advanced to answer to the brief’s demands and that funding round expired. It has taken a shift in outlook from one of post quake recovery to forward facing optimism to distill ideas into a now rigorous design solution that will stand the test of time.
