¡ After ¡his ¡studies ¡at ¡Capital ¡University ¡in ¡Ohio ¡and ¡Leipzig ¡University ¡in ¡Germany, ¡ ¡ Rev. ¡Pflueger ¡resolved ¡to ¡become ¡a ¡missionary. ¡He ¡studied ¡one ¡year ¡of ¡medicine ¡at ¡Tulane ¡University ¡in ¡New ¡Orleans, ¡focusing ¡on ¡tropical ¡diseases ¡as ¡a ¡ way ¡to ¡prepare ¡for ¡adventures ¡ahead. ¡Traveling ¡with ¡his ¡wife, ¡he ¡arrived ¡in ¡India ¡in ¡1916. ¡However, ¡World ¡War ¡I ¡was ¡in ¡progress, ¡and ¡because ¡of ¡his ¡ German ¡studies ¡and ¡background, ¡Pflueger ¡and ¡his ¡wife ¡were ¡not ¡allowed ¡into ¡India. ¡ ¡ They ¡boarded ¡a ¡ship ¡to ¡head ¡back ¡to ¡the ¡US, ¡and ¡were ¡shipwrecked ¡on ¡an ¡island ¡in ¡the ¡Philippines. ¡Surviving ¡the ¡wreck, ¡they ¡found ¡that ¡the ¡island’s ¡ populace ¡was ¡struggling ¡with ¡an ¡epidemic ¡of ¡cholera. ¡Pflueger ¡and ¡his ¡wife ¡stayed ¡there ¡six ¡months, ¡helping ¡the ¡sick. ¡Then ¡they ¡again ¡set ¡sail ¡for ¡America, ¡ arriving ¡in ¡Seattle ¡with ¡instructions ¡from ¡the ¡Ohio ¡Synod ¡to ¡“find ¡a ¡place ¡in ¡Seattle ¡that ¡doesn’t ¡have ¡a ¡Lutheran ¡church, ¡and ¡establish ¡one.” ¡Pflueger ¡ founded ¡his ¡mission ¡church ¡at ¡the ¡top ¡of ¡Queen ¡Anne ¡Hill, ¡where ¡he ¡remained ¡pastor ¡until ¡1930 ¡and ¡raised ¡six ¡children. ¡After ¡serving ¡at ¡Queen ¡Anne ¡ Lutheran, ¡he ¡became ¡a ¡professor ¡at ¡Pacific ¡Lutheran, ¡where ¡a ¡building ¡is ¡now ¡named ¡after ¡him. ¡ ¡
