WHAT IS CLIMATE CHANGE?
Alison Cucco Chair, Jersey City Environmental Commission
WHAT IS CLIMATE?
Climate refers to long term patterns of temperature and precipitation. Climates shift on scales of decades, centuries or millennia.

WHAT ARE GREENHOUSE GASES?
Greenhouse Gases ‐ gases in the atmosphere that retain heat
- Carbon Dioxide (CO2) – fossil‐fuel burning is the major human caused source of
carbon dioxide
- Methane (CH4) – ruminants and rice paddies are sources
- Nitrous Oxide (N2O) – vehicle engines, agriculture processes are major sources

OBSERVATIONS OF CLIMATE CHANGE
- NJ will experience more extreme
weather including droughts, floods, heat waves and hurricanes
- Hurricane Sandy and Irene
- Low‐lying coastal cities like Jersey
City are especially vulnerable
- 12‐16” rise in sea level (4‐8” greater
than global avg.) in last 100 years

THE ROLE OF THE IPCC
- Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change or IPCC ‐ an
international group of scientists and governmental representatives from 130 countries formed to review the scientific evidence for climate change
- The IPCC stated that limiting global warming to 1.5°C (2.7˚F) would “reduce
risks to marine biodiversity, fisheries, and ecosystems.”
- To remain within a 1.5°C (2.7˚F) global warming scenario by the end of the
century, a 45 percent reduction of global human‐induced GHG emissions of 2010 levels by 2030, reaching net zero near 2050, is required.

WHAT IS CLIMATE CHANGE?
“As best as can be determined, the world is now warmer than it has been at any point in the last two millennia, and, if current trends continue, by the end of the century it will likely be hotter than at any point in the last two million years.” ‐ American Geophysical Union
