College Tip of the Week: Cool sweatshirt! Many years ago, one of my friends lived in New Jersey. I went to visit her, and we did some local site seeing including going to see the campus of Princeton. It was so awesome, being
shirt around, and people would ask him if he went to Princeton - he would say, "No, but my wife did." This was not a lie... Lots of kids want to go to "sweatshirt schools." You know them-the ones with huge name recognition. Ones where when you wear the sweatshirt, people think you are cool because the shirt says so - right?! Colleges are learning institutions and they are brands. Some students and parents get very caught up with the lure of the brand and forget what can come with it. You have got to do some introspection on how many of the emotional strings that are attached to some of these schools can you handle? Fit should be established by the
fight tooth and nail to get into a school, are you going to thrive by swimming with the sharks or are you going to get eaten by them? Does intense academic competition motivate you even in defeat, or does it crush your spirit? Whatever your answer is OKAY. You have to examine your personality, and we are all different. Ending up in an environment that is too much can cause issues from anxiety to eating disorders. I have students all the time that tell me, "If I get into Awesome University and the College of Magnificence, I will choose Awesome because it's a better school." Really? Because they get more applications? That does not make it a better school - period. Pick the school that checks all of your boxes, and know the genuine reason why you want to go there - most students really cannot give their answer. If "why" is based on brand name alone or because that's where you think the cool kids attend, just go to the bookstore and buy a sweatshirt Check out: https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/
