Why Modeling the Future?
The Modeling the Future Challenge aims to help high school students connect with the exciting real-world
available through mathematics and actuarial science. The resources and college scholarships available through the MTF Challenge help students learn about the applied benefits of becoming skilled in mathematics and how those skills can translate into some of the best careers around the globe!
Putting math to work to increase the actuarial workforce:
- Actuary is consistently rated as one of the best
jobs in America.
- Actuaries earn great starting salaries that can
double within the first five years.
- Actuarial jobs are always in high demand.
- Actuaries participate in high-level business
decision-making and solve real problems in every industry.
- But… Actuaries require top skills in Mathematics!

How it Works
The premise is simple. Develop and present mathematical models describing how autonomous vehicle technologies might change the future! Working individually or in groups of up to 3, students research and analyze data to develop their own mathematical models about how autonomous vehicles might affect 3 areas:
- 1. Transportation
- 2. Insurance
- 3. An aspect of society at large

How it Works: Data
Students will be provided baseline datasets to be used, but they are not restricted to these and can add data through their own research.

How it Works: Submissions
Student submissions are sent in online to the MTF Challenge review panel. Submissions are a single PDF or MS Word document including all analysis and figures. Submissions include:
- 1. Executive Summary (Up to 2 pages max)
- 2. Transportation Industry Changes (Up to 10 pages max)
- 3. Insurance Industry Changes (Up to 10 pages max)
- 4. Society at Large Changes (Up to 5 pages max)
- 5. Conclusions and Recommendations (Up to 3 pages max)

How it Works: Judging
Submissions are reviewed by a panel of experienced actuaries to evaluate the students’ mathematical analysis and critical-thinking skills. Review Criteria:
- 1. Executive Summary (5pts)
- 2. Data Methodology (5pts)
- 3. Mathematics Methodology (5pts)
- 4. Transportation Analysis (5pts)
- 5. Insurance Analysis (5pts)
- 6. Society at Large Analysis (5pts)
- 7. Conclusions & Recommendations (10pts)

How it Works: Final Presentations & Awards
Finalists are brought to the Modeling the Future Symposium in New York City to present their findings live in front of the expert panel of Actuaries.
