Giving Google (and YouTube) its Due

Here are a few tips to help you dive a little bit deeper with search engines

  • Use Google’s Advanced Search Tool to narrow your results
  • How to dig a little deeper

» Organization + filetype:xls; :ppt; :doc; etc. = Files » Organization + Technology = IP, IT, Research » Organization + Topic + Research = Experts, Research » Organization + Conference + Topic = Experts, Proceedings

  • YouTube is now the second largest search engine on the planet.

Beyond a Google Search

www.mti-global.org

Google might be a good place to start, but where can you find an answer that you can trust?

  • Associations: turn to the industry experts
  • Databases: mining the deep web for answers
  • Libraries and Librarians: a great, inexpensive, publically available resource
  • Trade Shows/Conferences

The Power of Associations

www.mti-global.org

Associations: The gold standard when it comes to reliable answers

  • Find subject matter experts and other valuable resources in industry associations:
  • Populated by experts/peers active in their fields
  • Staffed by subject matter experts
  • Surrounded by consultants with unique experience/knowledge
  • Access to databases that are unavailable to non-members
  • Opportunity to cross-check answers with multiple sources
  • Often offer seminars, training, and other opportunities to mine for useful info
  • Non-members have very limited access to information, but may still be able to call or

email query for an answer or directions to another source.

Trade Shows

www.mti-global.org

Working trade shows and conferences for answers

  • First select the right show, then develop a game plan (How many folks here

spent significant time planning for this show, and I’m not talking about ordering carpet?)

  • Develop a pre-show list of questions that you want answered, then target

speakers, exhibitors, delegates, and show organizers. Know what it is that you need to know.

  • News staff might have the answer you need or be able to point you in the

direction of the right resource.

  • Approach presenters/experts with a short list of questions that you want
  • answered. Most will be flattered that you are asking for their advice, and if they

can’t provide the information that you need, they will probably point you in the right direction.
