Only 34 million IPv4 addresses for a pop lation of 1 2 billion in India population of 1.2 billion in India.

But the requirement for IP addresses will keep But the requirement for IP addresses will keep increasing with new services, new networks, new applications. Telecommunications will be largest consumer of IP addresses in coming years (Broadband, 3G, NGN, 4G LTE etc ) 4G, LTE etc.)

IPv4 is a diminishing resource and is very costly compared to IPv6 right now and will be more costlier with passage of time IPv6 right now and will be more costlier with passage of time

Proposal of Smart Buildings

Proposed to take up IPv6-based smart-building pilot projects for TEC and Proposed to take up IPv6 based smart building pilot projects for TEC and Electronics Niketan to make them energy efficient (Saving upto 30%) and with reduced CO2 emissions (upto 24%) [towards the goal of a greener building] using IPv6 technologies. g] g g

  • In India according to the National Economic Survey 2009-10,
  • The eleventh 5 year plan includes an indicative target of increasing energy
  • The eleventh 5-year plan includes an indicative target of increasing energy

efficiency by 20% by 2016-17.

  • India’s per capita carbon dioxide emissions will increase nearly 3-fold to 3.5

tonnes by 2030 tonnes by 2030.

  • Government of India plans to curb the carbon emissions related to the

growth of its economy – its carbon intensity – by 24% by 2020.

Proposal of Smart Buildings Contd.

Th b ildi b t k t h These building can be taken to showcase as Proof of concept for other government departments so that they can see it working and take up similar projects It will also give an opportunity to Indian manufacturers to understand the concept and see its live working so that they can then promote it p g y p across the country. This will lead to development of new business

  • pportunities in this area. For an energy deficient country like India, such

projects have great potential and manufacturers will find good business cases.

IPv6 Address Allocation Policy Committee

  • A committee has been formed consisting of 16 members of National and

International representation.

  • Two meetings have been held and interim report will be submitted by this

month end.

  • The committee studying all the aspects and country specific policy will be

framed.

slide-24
SLIDE 24

Right now IPv6 addresses are being allocated by APNIC to individual telecom Service Providers/internet service providers and other organizations just like Proposal for Changing APNIC IPv6 Address allocation Policy Service Providers/internet service providers and other organizations just like allocation of IPv4 addresses in which telecom Service Providers/internet service providers and other organizations specially in India are not having i IP dd bl k contiguous IP address blocks. This causes inefficiencies in routing table as well as creating problems to Indian law enforcement agencies in tracing out the IP address of the end users. So taking cue from this problem Government of India (Department of g p ( p Telecommunications) set up a 15 members committee for formulation of the National IPv6 address policy having national and international members from all stakeholders all stakeholders. In the 2nd meeting of the committee held on 18th July 2011 in New Delhi members were of the opinion that India as a whole should ask for a bigger members were of the opinion that India as a whole should ask for a bigger block of IPv6 address from APNIC.

slide-25
SLIDE 25

The exact requirement of this block will be worked out on the basis of IPv6 address allocated to various

  • rganizations

such as telecom Service address allocated to various

  • rganizations

such as telecom Service Providers/internet service providers and other organizations and new entrants like other central Government departments, State Government departments, bli t it i liti ll h it l d th t i th public sector units, universalities, colleges, hospitals and other sectors in the country and their future requirement of IP addresses for next 20 years at least ( as IPv6 addresses are not going to be exhausted in these years). As right now APNIC policy does not allow address block to be allocated country wise, we are seeking a change in the policy for allocation of IPv6 y , g g p y address country wise rather than individual organizations wise. In case of IPv6 Addresses there is huge availability of IP addresses ,so in f India we want to have one big block of IPv6 Addresses say e.g./16 wanted to be reserved for us and allocated to Indian NIR. This Address space will take care of requirement of all TSPs/ISPs industries and other organizations.
