SAVE THE CHILDREN PROGRAM IN VIETNAM: CHILD FOCUSED CBDRM

  • When a disaster happened, people start organize rescue,

provide food, rebuild road, dike and infrastructure, it is assumed that children will benefit from the supply or the public construction.

  • Every one talk about children affected matter when a disaster
  • ccurred, Save the children in Vietnam offered special program

to address this typical issue.

  • Save the children started the CHILD FOCUSED disaster

preparedness program in 2003 with support from DIPECHO

  • In 2008-2009, Save The Children raise participation level and

combine Child Focused with CHILD-LED disaster preparedness

  • In 2010 – 2011 the program integrate with JANI to bring Child-

Led DRR into schools and education sector, scale up to ministerial level

INCLUSION OF DRR INTO SCHOOLS SC AND JANI EFFORTS

SC experiences showed that:

  • Children are creative, it is valuable to listen to children.
  • It is important to include children who are unable to join schooling
  • Disaster mitigation planning need to be updated frequently
  • Involving children in CBDRM is costless but high effects

SETTING UP CHILD-DRR CLUB IN SCHOOLS – Each child- DRR club has from 20 to 25 children balancing boys and girls – Children select their representatives to participate in the club. Teachers/ youth union provide technical support – Conduct meeting/ activities weekly – Conduct DRR drawing contest, DRR song contest, story telling, best photo contests, game show. – Conduct new initiatives for DRR/CCA actions (grow trees, save energy, life protection skills etc)
