Travelling Ahead • Works across Wales • Gypsy, Roma and Traveller children and young people • Regional Forums - ensuring young peoples voices are heard and can influence policy and practice • National Forum annually for young people • Education Good Practice Project • Tackling bulling and hate crime pilot project • Tackling negative media
Experiences of bullying • Numerous research studies find that racist bullying and discrimination is commonplace for Gypsy, Roma and Traveller children in the UK • 2014 study found nine out of ten GRT children experience bullying at school • Big Fat Gypsy Wedding increases bullying and name calling in schools (Foster 2014)) • Key factor impacting on parents lack of trust in school and pupils experience of school • Attendance is the key factor in low attainment
Peer Education Research Young people tell Travelling Ahead in their Good Practice project on education 2014-15 that: • Name calling and sometimes physical attacks are still experienced and remain everyday experiences • Schools do not confidently tackle racist bullying against them – some teachers perpetuate it • Teachers do not have enough knowledge / training about their history and culture • Trusted staff who build up relationships with their families and can support them at school are essential
