NESA assumes you will do your personal best in the HSC exams!

School based assessment creates a ranked list with relative gaps

The whole cohort’s performance in the final HSC exam will determine the moderated assessment marks.

How are the Assessment Marks Moderated?

Step 1:

  • Create a ranked list of

students based on the schools assessment tasks.

  • The rank order doesn’t

change.

  • The relative gaps are

maintained

Student School Assessment Rank School Assessment Mark

Amanda 1 95 Madeleine 2 94 Thomas 3 89 Kate 4 88 Beth 5 85 Greg 6 80 Matthew 7 75 Olivia 8 70 Patrick 9 60 Sophie 10 50 Marc 11 45

Range = 95-45 = 50

Mater vs NSW

  • Feedback and what you do with it

has the most influence on

  • performance. (J. Hattie, 2003)
  • Be open to feedback - listen, take

note, identify areas to focus on and keep trying.

  • Take feedback as a positive way

forward to improve.

  • The higher the HSC exam

scores, the higher the school assessment marks.

  • NEVER GIVE UP!!

All results tell a story ….

Many of the results in Bands 1 & 2 are the result of a non-serious attempts.

HSC Exam Illness/Misadventure

  • Call and let the school and the NESA Presiding

Officer know.

  • Get a Dr certificate or supporting documentation - it

will be NESA’s decision based on your evidence.

  • Similar process to school based illness/misadventure

however NESA make the decisions based on the evidence you supply.

slide-15
SLIDE 15

On-going illness/ misadventure in the HSC Year

  • ACCESS scheme through UAC.
  • Bonus ATAR points.
  • Must have external documentation.
slide-16
SLIDE 16

ATAR Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank

  • The ATAR is a number between 0 and 99.95 with increments of 0.05.
  • It provides a measure of your overall academic achievement in the NSW HSC in relation

to that of other students, and it helps institutions rank applicants for selection.

  • It is calculated on behalf of the universities and released by UAC.
  • Your ATAR indicates your position relative to the students who started Year 7 with

you.

  • The ranked list is calculated by adding ‘scaled’ scores for your two best HSC English

units and then your next best eight units.

  • An ATAR of 80.00 indicates that you have performed well enough in the HSC to place

you in the top 20% of your cohort. You are ranked in the top 20%

slide-17
SLIDE 17

‘Success beats Scaling’

ATAR

  • The better you go in each subject the less the UAC scaling will affect

your ATAR.

  • Every student in this cohort can add 5%, 10% or even 20% to their

performance between the Trial HSC and HSC.

slide-18
SLIDE 18

Beware of the ATAR Calculator

Range for school based assessment: 100 – 0 Realistic range for HSC scores: 100 – 45 (approx)

Realistic range for Mater HSC students if everyone puts in their very best from now: 100 - 60
