OPENING SENTENCE This is a light to reveal God to the nations and the glory of his people Israel. Luke 2.32 THE GATHERING OF THE COMMUNITY (Pg 230) Celebrant: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. All: And with thy spirit. Almighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. THE SUMMARY OF THE LAW Celebrant: Our Lord Jesus Christ said: hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is

  • ne Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with

all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. All: Lord, have mercy upon us, and write both these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee. Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. THE GLORIA Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly king, God the Father almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sin of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us.

THE FIRST READING: Malachi 3:1-4

1See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord

Reader: The Word of the Lord All: Thanks be to God PSALM 84 (Page 735)

1 How dear to me is your dwelling, O Lord of hosts! *My soul has a desire

and longing for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God.

2 The sparrow has found her a house and the swallow a nest where she may

God of pilgrims, teach us to recognize your dwelling-place in the love, generosity, and support of those with whom we share our journey, and help us to worship you in our response to those who need our care; for all the world is your temple and every human heart is a sign of your presence, made known to us in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE SECOND READING: Hebrews 2:14-18

14Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared

the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. 16For it is clear that he did not come to help angels, but the descendants of Abraham. 17Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people.

18Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who

are being tested. Reader: The Word of the Lord All: Thanks be to God. THE GOSPEL Reader: The Lord be with you. All: And with thy spirit. Reader: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke (2:22- 40) All: Glory be to thee, O Lord.

22When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they

brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23(as it is written in the law of the Lord, ‘Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord’),

24and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, ‘a

pair of turtle-doves or two young pigeons.’ 25Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. 26It had been

revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, 28Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, 29‘Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; 30for my eyes have seen your salvation, 31which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.’ 33And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. 34Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, ‘This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed 35so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul too.’ 36There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband for seven years after her marriage, 37then as a widow to the age

  • f eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshipped there with fasting and

prayer night and day. 38At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.

39When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they

returned child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favour of God was upon him. Reader: The Gospel of Christ. All: Praise be to thee, O Christ. HOMILY THE NICENE CREED (Page 234) All: I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible; And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds, God, of God; Light, of Light; very God, of very God; begotten, not made; being of one substance with the Father; through whom all things were made: who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man, and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried, and the third day he rose again according to the scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the

  • Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the

dead: whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceedeth

from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, who spake by the prophets. And I believe one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. OR THE APOSTLES’ CREED (Page 251) I believe in God the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Come unto me all that labour and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you. Matthew 1.28 God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, to the end that all that believe in him should not perish, but have eternal life. John 3.16 Hear also what Saint Paul saith. This is a true saying, and worthy of all to be received, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. 1 Timothy 1.15 Hear also what Saint John saith. If anyone sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2.1,2 Let us humbly confess our sins to almighty God. Or (page 239) Celebrant: Ye that do truly and earnestly repent you of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbours, and intend to lead the new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from henceforth in his holy ways: draw near with faith, and take this holy sacrament to your comfort; and make your humble confession to almighty God. All: Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Maker of all things and judge of all people: we acknowledge and confess our manifold sins and wickedness, which we from time to time most grievously have committed, by thought, word and deed, against thy divine majesty. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings. Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honour and glory of thy name; Through Jesus Christ

  • ur Lord. Amen.

Celebrant: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all them that with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him: have mercy upon you; pardon and deliver you from all your sins; confirm and strengthen you in all goodness; and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. All: Amen.

OFFERTORY OFFERTORY INTERLUDE: (Tell Out My Soul) PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS Almighty God, accept the joyful offering of your Church, and grant that your Son may shine in us as the light that lightens every nation. We ask this in the name of the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. EUCHARISTIC PRAYER B (243) Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And with thy spirit. Celebrant: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up unto the Lord. Celebrant: Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. People: It is meet and right so to do. It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God, creator and preserver of all things. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who, in substance of our mortal flesh, manifested forth his glory, that he might bring us out of darkness into his

  • wn marvellous light.

Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name; evermore praising thee and saying: All: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy

Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest. Please kneel or sit as you are able.

Celebrant: All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine

  • wn image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ

to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our

  • redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world;

and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to His disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance

  • f me.

Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory. And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. All: We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee, and we pray to thee, Lord

  • ur God.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord,

  • urselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake
  • f this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and

blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity

  • f the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty,

world without end. Amen.

22Then it was time for the purification offering, as required by the law of Moses

after the birth of a child; so his parents took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. 23The law of the Lord says, "If a woman's first child is a boy, he must be dedicated to the Lord." 24So they offered a sacrifice according to what was required in the law of the Lord -- "either a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons." 25Now there was a man named Simeon who lived in Jerusalem. He was a righteous man and very devout. He was filled with the Holy Spirit, and he eagerly expected the Messiah to come and rescue Israel. 26The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that he would not die until he had seen the Lord's Messiah.27That day the Spirit led him to the Temple. So when Mary and Joseph came to present the baby Jesus to the Lord as the law required, 28Simeon was there. He took the child in his arms and praised God, saying, 29"Lord, now I can die in peace! As you promised me, 30I have seen the Savior 31you have given to all people. 32He is a light to reveal God to the nations, and he is the glory of your people Israel!"

33Joseph and Mary were amazed at what was being said about Jesus. 34Then

Simeon blessed them, and he said to Mary, "This child will be rejected by many in Israel, and it will be their undoing. But he will be the greatest joy to many

  • thers. 35Thus, the deepest thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword

will pierce your very soul." 36Anna, a prophet, was also there in the Temple. She was the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher, and was very old. She was a widow, for her husband had died when they had been married only seven years.

37She was now eighty-four years old. She never left the Temple but stayed there

day and night, worshiping God with fasting and prayer. 38She came along just as Simeon was talking with Mary and Joseph, and she began praising God. She talked about Jesus to everyone who had been waiting for the promised King to come and deliver Jerusalem. 39When Jesus' parents had fulfilled all the requirements of the law of the Lord, they returned home to Nazareth in Galilee.

40There the child grew up healthy and strong. He was filled with wisdom beyond

22Then when the days stipulated by Moses for purification were complete, they

took him up to Jerusalem to offer him to God 23as commanded in God's Law: "Every male who opens the womb shall be a holy offering to God," 24and also to sacrifice the "pair of doves or two young pigeons" prescribed in God's Law. 25In Jerusalem at the time, there was a man, Simeon by name, a good man, a man who lived in the prayerful expectancy of help for Israel. And the Holy Spirit was

  • n him. 26The Holy Spirit had shown him that he would see the Messiah of God

before he died. 27Led by the Spirit, he entered the Temple. As the parents of the child Jesus brought him in to carry out the rituals of the Law, 28Simeon took him into his arms and blessed God: 29God, you can now release your servant; release me in peace as you promised. 30With my own eyes I've seen your salvation; 31it's now out in the open for everyone to see: 32A God-revealing light to the non- Jewish nations, and of glory for your people Israel. 33Jesus' father and mother were speechless with surprise at these words. 34Simeon went on to bless them, and said to Mary his mother, This child marks both the failure and the recovery

  • f many in Israel, A figure misunderstood and contradicted - 35the pain of a

sword-thrust through you - But the rejection will force honesty, as God reveals who they really are. 36Anna the prophetess was also there, a daughter of Phanuel from the tribe of Asher. She was by now a very old woman. She had been married seven years 37and a widow for eighty-four. She never left the Temple area, worshiping night and day with her fastings and prayers. 38At the very time Simeon was praying, she showed up, broke into an anthem of praise to God, and talked about the child to all who were waiting expectantly for the freeing of

  • Jerusalem. 39When they finished everything required by God in the Law, they

returned to Galilee and their own town, Nazareth. 40There the child grew strong in body and wise in spirit. And the grace of God was on him. They Found Him in the Temple. Prayer: O Blessed Lord, who caused all Holy Scripture to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ, Amen.

Fountain of life and source of all goodness, you made all things and fill them with your blessing; you created them to rejoice in the splendour of your

  • radiance. Countless throngs of angels stand before you to serve you night

and day, and, beholding your presence, they offer you unceasing praise. Joining with them, and giving voice to every creature under heaven, we acclaim you, and glorify your name, as we sing (say), All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Please kneel or sit as you are able. We acclaim you, holy Lord, glorious in power; your mighty works reveal your wisdom and love. You formed us in your own image, giving the whole world into our care, so that, in obedience to you, our creator, we might rule and serve all your creatures. When our disobedience took us far from you, you did not abandon us to the power of death. In your mercy you came to

  • ur help, so that in seeking you we might find you. Again and again you

called us into covenant with you, and through the prophets you taught us to hope for salvation. Father, you loved the world so much that in the fullness of time you sent your only Son to be our Saviour. Incarnate by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, he lived as one of us, yet without sin. To the poor he proclaimed the good news of salvation; to prisoners, freedom; to the sorrowful, joy. To fulfil your purpose he gave himself up to death and, rising from the grave, destroyed death and made the whole creation new. And that we might live no longer for ourselves, but for him who died and rose for us, he sent the Holy Spirit, his own first gift for those who believe, to complete his work in the world, and to bring to fulfilment the sanctification

  • f all.

When the hour had come for him to be glorified by you, his heavenly Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end: at supper with them he took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. SILENCE Father, we now celebrate the memorial of our redemption. Recalling Christ’s death and descent among the dead, proclaiming his resurrection and ascension to your right hand, awaiting his coming in glory; and offering to you, from the gifts you have given us, this bread and this cup, we praise you and we bless you. All: We praise you, we bless you, we give thanks to you, and we pray to you, Lord our God. Celebrant: Father, we pray that in your goodness and mercy your Holy Spirit may descend upon us, and upon these gifts, sanctifying them and showing them to be holy gifts for your holy people, the bread of life and the cup of salvation, the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Grant that all who share this bread and this cup may become one body and

The church that offers healing, discerns its wounds and loss; The church that faces dying shares life beyond the cross; To people torn and broken your mercy is revealed; We praise your name, who love us, the Healer and the Healed. One voice alone is ragged; together, we are strong: We praise your name, who breathe us, the Singer and the Song.  ANTHEM Amen – Hogan PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION God for whom we wait, you fulfilled the hope of Simeon, who did not die till he had welcomed the Messiah.
