Some history of the DANO area….

  • The DANO was built in the mid 1970s and used to separate out the heavy

fraction (metal and glass) in the waste stream before being landfilled (everything went into the bin in this era).

  • Once the DANO stopped operating in the mid 90s, it was not demolished

because the lower part of it housed the electric transformer and the electric distribution network for the site. The upper Dano building was reused for Biowaste operations.

  • The lower DANO yard area was used for ancillary waste activities.
  • However,
  • In 2014/15 a new transformer and electric distribution network was

installed.

  • Therefore, there was no reason for keeping the lower DANO building

……… but the yard was still useful.

Post demolition of the lower Dano building

  • As part of the demolition notice BCC is duty bound to remediate this

area.

  • BCC are looking to infill the void left with inert soil and then put a

concrete slab on top.

  • This will then bring the area up to the level of the rest of the
  • perational site and reinstate its usefulness, whilst still being hidden

from view behind the landfill restoration.

  • The area will continue to be used for a variety of waste

management activities including storage / repair of recycling centre containers and emergency storage if other sections of High Heavens are not available.

The Biowaste Transfer Station Update

10

Why do we need a new Biowaste Transfer Station?

The new Waste Transfer Station (WTS) will:

  • Replace existing transfer infrastructure at High Heavens with a

modern, more flexible facility;

  • Help the Council comply with Waste Disposal Authority (WDA)

statutory duties;

  • Achieve beneficial interfaces with other WDA projects/contracts e.g.

bulky waste shredding, Household Recycling Centres (HRCs) etc.; and

  • Provide continued VfM for the Council’s rate-payers.
