The importance

  • f shipping

CARGO

Every year, billions of tonnes of goods cross the world’s oceans, following the main trade routes. The most important forms of transport for trade are tankers, bulk carriers and container ships. The largest of these ships now carry almost 20,000 containers, packed with consumer goods and other materials.

The importance

  • f shipping

CARGO

Maritime transport is a vital part of the global economy. Around 95% of all trade is carried for at least part of its journey via sea routes,

  • n a fmeet of over 50,000 ships, carrying
  • ver 8 billion tonnes of cargo every year.

TRINITY HOUSE // KEY STAGE 3 GLOBAL CONNECTIONS

The importance

  • f shipping

CARGO

As the need for the import and export

  • f food and goods around the world

increases, our shipping lanes become increasingly crowded. The UK is an island nation and depends

  • n trade via shipping. Because there is

so much sea traffjc, ships need help to navigate the waters safely.

The role of Trinity House

CARGO

Trinity House is a charity that helps keep ships and seafarers safe when they travel in our waters. It does this by providing aids to navigation to help seafarers guide their vessel to safety.

Aids to navigation

CARGO

Trinity House looks after 66 lighthouses and around 450 buoys around England Wales, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar, as well as other aids to navigation. These help ships navigate safely in our waters.

Buoys

CARGO

A buoy is a highly visual object that fmoats in water and is used to locate or warn passing ships. Buoys are generally bright in colour so they can be seen by mariners. Their difgerent colours, shapes and designs are part of a visual language that tell seafarers about difgerent safety messages, such as nearby hazards, safe routes and more.

Lightvessels

CARGO

Trinity House operates a number of

  • lightvessels. These provide a visual aid

to navigation in daylight hours in the form of a large red ship and by night they provide long-range powerful light for ships in the area. The aids to navigation provided by Trinity House assist all mariners, at all times and in all conditions.

Is globalisation a good thing?

CARGO

Yes, because:

 Consumers (customers) have greater choice;  Globalisation makes more goods and services

available to more people, often at lower prices;

 A globalised world exposes people to the culture,

attitudes and values of people in other countries which can help strengthen ties between nations.

slide-24
SLIDE 24

TRINITY HOUSE // KEY STAGE 3 GLOBAL CONNECTIONS

Is globalisation a good thing?

CARGO

No, because:

 Smaller companies fjnd it diffjcult to compete

with the lower prices ofgered by larger companies and many go out of business;

 The competition to produce things at a cheaper

price can result in natural and human resources being exploited. This can result in serious damage to the environment, and often poor conditions for workers as companies try to keep costs down.
