Program Updates

3

  • Gifted Programs will become the Advanced Learning Department.
  • WACs now require districts to reduce barriers to inclusion for lower

socio‐economic students.

  • Increased communication and testing during the instructional

day at Ardmore, Lake Hills, Phantom Lake, Sherwood Forest, Stevenson, and Woodridge.

  • Piloted universal testing for 2nd grade students at Ardmore, Clyde

Hill, and Woodridge in January.

  • Working with other departments and schools to identify

students receiving ELL, IEP, 504, services and Black and Latino students.

  • Currently considering changes to identification instruments that

are more racially/culturally unbiased and can be used to universally test students district wide at two or more elementary grade levels.

  • 303 students in grades 2‐12 are now receiving services in

their home school.

Guiding Vision and Purpose

  • Provide an academically appropriate learning environment that is challenging

and meaningful, while recognizing that the innate intellectual potential of highly capable children must be nurtured in order for them to maximize their potential.

  • The Gifted Program seeks to:
  • Identify and serve students from all races, all cultural groups, and all

economic strata within the Bellevue School District.

  • Challenge students to explore their potential and become knowledgeable,

principled, open‐minded, caring, balanced and reflective thinkers, who inquire, communicate, and take risks (International Baccalaureate Learner Profile).

  • Provide instructional materials and pedagogy that encourages children to

reach their full potential.

  • Prepare children to become active, contributing members of an

interdependent, global community.

  • Assist students in developing life‐long learning skills.
  • Extend gifted pedagogy to all classrooms across the district.
  • Provide support and education for families.

Racial Equity Focus

14 Increased communication to teachers and families at Ardmore, Lake Hills, Phantom Lake, Sherwood Forest, Stevenson, and Woodridge.

  • Requested referrals from teachers
  • Provided information and applications for teachers to provide to

parents during conferences

  • Provided gifted testing during the school day

Planning to pilot the Naglieri Nonverbal Abilities Test and possibly the Torrence Test of Creativity this spring with students at Stevenson Elementary. Planning to utilize the Naglieri Nonverbal Abilities Test to universally screen at least two elementary grade levels in 2018‐19. Changed the K‐1 identification process to include collection of performance data only, without standardized testing, to ensure all students have an equitable opportunity to be identified.

Inclusion Focus

15

Providing opportunities for students to receive gifted services in their home school to increase participation of students who have typically been underserved. Implementing domain specific services in Reading and Math through the home school service option, in order to serve more students. Working with small groups of students not typically referred for advanced learning due to race, language, or disability, to determine a need for services. Removing the gifted label from our students/schools and instead providing services to students in need no matter where they attend. Provided professional development, coaching, and encouragement for ensuring high level instruction for all students in need of extensions and acceleration in their home school environment.
