labfolder at the DZNE server
Implementation at DZNE
- successfully pilot-tested in Peter Heutink’s and Patricia Rizzu’s lab (2018-2019)
- currently: rollout process with a limited number of groups in Bonn and Tübingen (9 in total)
- Admin training for research group leaders (October 9th & October 11th, 2019)
- User training for super users (October 14th and October 16th, 2019)
- Dedicated demos and training for all members of the first on-boarding groups
- Key users will serve an important informal “coaching” role in the on-boarding of further research groups
- Next: expand the use of labfolder to more groups in Bonn and Tübingen, as well as other DZNE sites.
DZNE rules
- The use of labfolder at DZNE on an individual basis will be voluntary (group leaders can strongly encourage
but not require its use). The labfolder groups will be started by the Research Group Leaders.
- Access to labfolder is done through the DZNE network or VPN (no cloud storage)
- For any groups within which there is use of paper laboratory notebooks, the DZNE Internal Rule on paper lab
notebooks still applies (“DZNE Standards for Recording and Archiving Research Data on Paper Format”)
- The license costs are paid centrally and not from the group budget. Purchase of any related hardware (e.g.
ipads/tablets) is from the group budget.
- Currently labfolder is only available to DZNE users (with DZNE email addresses)

General settings for DZNE labfolder
- Maximum size of files uploaded: 25 Mb. labfolder is not a data repository and raw data need to be saved at
the DZNE server
- 1 DZNE RG = 1 labfolder Group
- Dropbox as well as figshare apps are not activated at DZNE labfolder. All files are saved at the DZNE server. In
addition DZNE has the Nextcloud platform to share files, a safe internal system.
- Deletion of any entry is prevented (there is always the option to hide).
- Creation of private projects is prevented
