The problem

  • Landing obligation since 2015
  • During Q3, saithe is sometime

intermixed with herring in Skagerrak IIIaN

  • Hence, there is often bycatch of

saithe in herring fishery (Aug-Sept)

  • No specific quota for saithe in the

Swednish pelagic system

Conditions

  • The SPFPO contacted SLU
  • Grids in pelagic gear have been

used in blue whiting and Norway pout fisheries in Faeroe Islands and Norway

  • Not extensively tested or

evaluated in other fisheries

  • Gear trials supported by

Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management (SWaM) and the Ministry.

Implications of a saithe grid

  • Grid reduces unwanted catch of saithe with 92-100%

– With grid 30 kg/h saithe/h – Without grid, up to 1.5 ton saithe/h

  • Acceptable loss of herring

– On average 7.7%

  • In 2015 two vessels, 2016 8 vessels and for 2017 the

entire Swedish pelagic fleet is planning to use the grid

  • Excellent example of how the LO should be dealt

with, within the CFP framework

  • Mitigate saithe as choke species
  • Reduces catch handling and improves fish quality
  • Likely to be used in other fisheries selecting small

fish from large fish
