“SITTING WALL” (243)
Task 12 : C. Alexander, A Pattern Language. (1977)
› Invites physical/social interaction › Defensible space barrier which separates › Blurring boundaries, ambiguous
Helps natural boundaries take on proper character and serves as a seam to enrich and connect positive outdoor
- spaces. Low enough to sit on, high enough to mark
- division. Walls/fences can be too high, you lose
- connections. Complete removal of boundaries lose
subtlety of divisions between spaces and it feels uncomfortable to feel like you’re sitting in the street.
The problem is solved by a kind of barrier which functions as a barrier which separates, and as a seam which joins at the same time…
..swivel round to the other side… ..to sit with both legs atop… ..to sit astride the wall… …the wall invites you to perch…
› No need for extra benches / planters › Opportunity to plant, decorate, pierce › Soft tile and brick enrich sensory exp. ›
