– Aligning programmes into new simpler sector groups – Changing sector funding competitions to be simpler and broader in scope – Two broad competitions for funding in each sector group each year; each open to a much wider range of applications than previously – An ‘Open’ funding programme – with two rounds per year - for applications from any technology area or sector

Emerging and enabling technologies
Themes
Emerging technologies
An emerging technology is one that is still emerging from, or has only recently emerged from, the research base. It allows you to do something that was not possible before or was only possible in theory; because of this, it disrupts existing markets and leads to new ways of improving our lives as well as sources of wealth generation. Applicants should be able to demonstrate a step change in performance and bring a totally new technology sector to market, particularly in: – biofilms – energy harvesting – graphene – cutting-edge imaging technologies
Emerging technologies
Emerging and enabling technologies
Themes
Digital
Applicants should be able to demonstrate a significant development in, or use of, one or more of the following technologies: – machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) – cybersecurity – data analytics or ‘big data’ – distributed ledger technology (such as blockchain) – internet of things (IoT) – immersive media (such as virtual or augmented reality) – 5G
Digital
Manufacturing and materials
Themes
Manufacturing systems, technologies, processes or business models Materials development, properties, integration or reuse
Manufacturing and materials
Themes (Round 3)
e.g. process engineering, additive manufacturing, industrial biotechnology, mechanical conversion processes, coatings, surface engineering, textiles, supply chain management, new product introduction processes or remanufacture, or application of digital technology to a manufacturing approach
Manufacturing systems, technologies, processes or business models
Manufacturing and materials
Themes (Round 3)
e.g. materials for light-weighting, energy generation and storage (heat and electricity), electronics/sensors, bonding and joining technologies, or operation in demanding environments. Also includes the use of digital technologies to reduce time for material development, evaluation and assurance
