SLIDE 4

Why is this important?

  • Recommendations from Institute of Medicine (IOM) and Health Resources

and Services Administration (HRSA) stress the importance of contraception care as part of routine preventive services that should be included in the provision of primary care to reproductive-age women. https://www.hrsa.gov/womensguidelines/

  • Increasing awareness of and emphasis on effective contraception use:
  • Oregon adoption of CCO incentive metric on effective contraceptive use
  • National Quality Forum (NQF) endorsement of clinical performance measures

for contraceptive care in 2016. https://www.hhs.gov/opa/sites/default/files/clinical-performance-measures.pdf

How do you do it?

  • Review the guidance
  • Convene a team that includes clinicians,

clinic managers and support staff

  • Go through each section of the tool and

discuss where your clinic scores

  • Add up your score at the end to determine

whether you meet criteria for a Quality Contraception Provider or an Expert Contraception Provider

  • Identify areas with low scores and make a

plan for improvement

  • Repeat the assessment annually to chart

your progress

Scoring

  • Clinics must score at least 50 to rate as a

Quality Provider, 70 or above to rate as an Expert Provider

  • Scoring has been informally validated, but

needs more testing

  • Clinics can advertise themselves to their

patients as being quality or expert contraception providers

  • Clinics can communicate to other

clinicians that they are experts for referrals
